Scion: Genesis
It had been nine months, as the humans reckoned time, since he had watched one of his best friends- his brothers- fall while defending him in battle from a menace out of legend. And now, another brother had called him to come and witness the revival of some small scrap of their lost one's ember.
Megatron winced slightly as he limped into Shockwave's lab, absently shaking his head at the hand that Soundwave put out in offer of support.
"What's this I hear about part of Starscream's ember surviving?" asked the Decepticon leader, one hand absently going up to rub the ears of the white cat-bot who draped, purring, around his neck.
"Yes." Shockwave didn't turn from where he leaned over a CR tank in the corner. "Though the surviving fragment was minute, and contaminated by other CNA. Nevertheless, I have successfully obtained a viable ember from it."
"What CNA contaminated it?" Megatron felt his own ember sink at the news.
"That of his destroyer." Shockwave still didn't turn. "However, it is Starscream's which is dominant."
"Then this ember won't be Starscream?" asked Megatron quietly, oblivious to Ravage's headbutt of affectionate sympathy.
"No." Shockwave straightened finally and turned, holding out his cupped hand to offer something. "It is his son. This is Scion."
Megatron stared at the tiny bundle of parts that lay cuddled in his friend's palm, taking in the slender chassis, perfect miniature wings, and fingers nearly too delicate to believe. The little bot wore an exact duplicate of Starscream's colour pattern, though where the scientist's gleaming white had been set off by red and black, this one had maroon and dark grey.
Then he became aware of the intensely hopeful look that he was being given from a pair of big blue optics and stepped back.
"Baby!" squealed Ravage at the same moment, then jumped down for a closer look. "Hai, Baby! Do you see me waving?"
"Shockwave, this is an emberling," said Megatron over the chatter of baby bot and cat bot.
"Yes. As I said, the material that I had to work with was minute, and included none of Starscream's hardware or software." Shockwave gently used his gun hand to keep the tiny emberling from jumping down to see Ravage. "He will require careful nurture and training."
"Heya, Dad." Soundwave chuckled, his yellow optic band twinkling.
"No." The single word silenced even Ravage.
"Megatron?" asked Shockwave uncertainly.
"No." Megatron shook his head and turned toward the door, his limp painfully pronounced as his optics went white with distress. "Care for it, please. I... cannot."
His brothers watched him go, then exchanged a concerned glance.
"He is finally starting to grieve," said Shockwave quietly.
Soundwave nodded, and scooped Scion into his hands. "C'mon, little buddy, let's go find some fun."
"I had intended that Megatron raise him." Shockwave tried to retrieve the Seeklet.
"Don't worry. He will." Soundwave shoulder checked his friend, then chuckled and left the room, Ravage and the birds in his wake.
