Backwater. Hormah's Human Safe House. After Vik's Nap.

((continues from here))

In a small, but comfortable living room the noonday light filters gently through a curtain of pale gold hand knitted lace. There are muted sounds from outside as people occasionally walk past chatting with friends or family, and even fainter sounds from the now very busy Question Square. The furniture in the room is simple, but good, and there aren't any knickknacks, only a couple house plants and a blue crochet panel against one wall that has the alphabet on it and a verse of scripture.

The room is very quiet, the only living things in it being a sleeping elderly human woman in the softly vibrating armchair and a tiny green being of living gemstone hunkered on the nearby couch back to watch the sleeper. But the aroma of something rich cooking that is drifting in from the slightly open hall door attests to the fact that someone else is somewhere in the house.

Waking

Vik's dreams all finally settled down, leaving her to rest very deeply. But as all good sleeps go, this one comes to an end also.

She feels a compulsion to stretch and roll over. But finds she can't roll to her side. Vik opens her eyes, and as always when waking, things don't make sense right away.

She softly smacks her dry lips and mouth, trying to moisten them. Then looks at the window, the light soothing and slightly mesmerizing in her half asleep state.

A large yawn interrupts her gaze. Vik scrubs her face with both hands, and stretches lengthwise, pointing her toes and reaching way over her head, until her arthritic joints pinch, making her stop.

"Oww!" *joints pop loudly* "Ooh... I feel lots better. Good nap.. crazy, wild dreams though!" She can't stop another yawn, then realizes she doesn't know where she is. She blinks at her surroundings.

The room is lovely, comfy and very much restful. If it weren't for the fact that she didn't know where she was, she'd find it pretty easy to nap some more in this very soothing place.

Vik sits forward in her recliner. Then she realizes it isn't *her* old, dusky blue one at home. And this one has a gentle massage-type vibration that she wished her own recliner had. She runs her hand down one arm of the recliner appreciatively.

"I don't know who you belong to, but I wish I had one just like you."

Vik looks around, then realizes her glasses have slipped from her face. She finds them and puts them on, then slowly gazes all around the restful room.

"Hmm.. I have no clue where I am.. nothing's familiar. I must've.. no, I don't know anyone I might've visited overnight." she shrugs, "At least it's very lovely here, wherever here is."

Vik takes her glasses off in one hand, and massages her face and forehead with the other, trying to budge her memory.

She mutters softly and confusedly, "if *ever* I needed a cup of coffee, it's now." She groans, wishing she could remember whose house she's in. Then leans back in the recliner, hoping that the massager vibes will untangle her memory.

It's then that food aromas cut through the dense fog of her almost-but-not-quite-waking. "Man... That really smells good."

Vik senses something has shifted in the room, but she's not certain what it is, yet there is a difference, somehow.

Curious, she swings her head around this way and that, looking for whatever is making her feel that shift in the room.

She catches an odd movement from the corner of her eye and does a double take.

A tiny green being is waving it's tiny arms around from it's perch on the back of the couch. Vik wonders if she's still asleep and dreaming this. She sits up in the recliner with creaks and pops in her joints.

What looks like a speech bubble is above the little green being's head. Vik can see what looks like words, but she'll need to get closer to read them. Bifocal glasses are like that; a thing meant to help you see details often makes that very thing difficult to do!

"Ouch!" she ruefully rubs her thigh where she pinched herself, "I can see you, but.. oooh wait! I remember now! I'm in The Backwater!"

Vik smiles and relaxes, relieved she hasn't either lost her mind, or is lost in one of her wild, crazy dreams. She rubs her weak knees, then using both arms, slowly shoves herself to standing, though she's still bent over a bit.

She grabs the cane handle with both hands and forces her spine to align and stand her upright. A loud pop stuns her a moment. She winces and shakes her head, but grins a determined grin and proceeds slowly towards the couch.

Vik looks at the little person, she can see that the little being is a pretty little lady. She turns to sit on the couch, but her joints are protesting loudly.

One pop makes her loose her balance until she corrects for it, then carefully sits herself on the couch near to where the little person is. She smiles and arranges the shawl around her shoulders a little better.

"You are very pretty, and my favorite color too. And yes, I did see you after a bit, I'm sorry it took me so long." Vik relaxes more as her joints let up some of their discomfort, little by little.

"What's your name?" Vik says with a warm smile, "Mine is Vicki, you can call me that, or Vik, if you'd like to."

Vik's expression changes to beffudlement when she reads the speech bubble above the little lady's head. She looks back towards the recliner and stares at it a moment.

She looks back at the little lady, "Oh wow. I had no idea it could do that. A lift-recliner? Man.. I wish I'd realized before."

She smiles at the little green lady, "In any case, I know now. Thank you for telling me. Those are very helpful recliners! I'm grateful for the wonderful sleep I've had."

Vik rubs at a stubbornly sore muscle in her thigh while she tries to remember things.

"I have no memory of getting here. The last thing I do remember was Aoife chasing after a whirling woman.. Rose, then Mack-Mack pulling the rickshaw.. and a pretty green Transformer. Oooh, her name was.. Mira? I think?" she chuckles softly, "That part is kinda fuzzy."

She sighs and notices once more the yummy aromas in the room.

Vik listens and smiles gently. 'Good old Mack. That is one gentle man.' she thinks to herself.

She nods to the little lady, "Yes, please?" then she realizes what else she said, "..Mira got me a dress..? Oh my! I can't wait to see it!"

[personal profile] spiderlillie 2020-04-20 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Vik watches as the little green being summons over what looks to be a flying horse. It hovers there, making Vik stare. She blinks as she tries to focus on the tiny horse, she's utterly fascinated.

Vik shakes herself from staring when she notices the little green lady riding the horse is waving her in another direction. She reads her speech bubble and nods. Vik toddles over to the room she's being shown into.

Vik likes the room. It seems cozy and inviting, and plain, just like she likes things. She looks all around, inspecting things with her fingers. She likes to literally get the feel of things sometimes, and this time she feels it's not breaking rules to touch her surroundings to learn them.

Then she notices the open suitcase on the bed. She tilts her head in curiosity, and bends to pick up some of the items.. then one by one, she picks up all of them, inspecting them, trying to become familiar with them all. They all seem to be her size, she assumes they're meant for her to use.

Vik looks at the little green lady and her tiny horse. "Please? Are these for me to wear..? Umm.. I don't know what to call you though."

Vik looks at some things unsure of what they do. One thingie come with what looks to be an instruction book. Her eyebrows arc in curiosity, and a little worry; instruction books can be intimidating.

She eyes the spider thing wondering what it is or does or is for. She is usually quite scared of most all spiders. But this isn't intimidating, so she ends up running her fingers across it. The texture is comforting, despite the creature it represents. She smiles timidly and holds it so that her hands warm it up. Warm, it feels much friendlier to her fingers.

[personal profile] spiderlillie 2020-04-26 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Vik reads her speech bubble carefully, nodding as she grasps what little Strawbaby is saying. She picks up the spider and experiments. Sure enough, the tiny spider wiggles her legs. Vik giggles and lays it on her shawl so it can hold it closed. She gently strokes it in thanks.

"Umm, may I get a shower before I try all these lovely things on?" She chuckles softly, "Ole' Vik isn't as fresh as she'd like to be. And, these look wonderful, I'd love to be fresh when I wear them."

Then she looks slightly shocked and sheepish, "Oops, please forgive me Strawbaby, I've forgotten all my manners. It's great to make your acquaintance Strawbaby, and Apple!" She bows slightly, protesting joints popping as she resumes an upright postur. Vik runs her finger gently down the tiny horse's back, petting it. "You are both quite amazing!"

"Oh!" Vik scrubs around in her pockets trying to find something. In a bit, she removes a teensy brass jingle bell.

She'd found it that morning in the bottom of her medication basket, before she came to the Backwater. The tiny bell was half the size of an English pea, but it had been just big enough to make one of her medication bottles tip and fall. So she'd stuck it in her pocket and forgotten it.

Vik blows the lint off the jingle bell, and lays it down next to Strawbaby.

"This is for you, Strawbaby, if you'd like it. It's a tiny jingle bell, it has a teensy sound when you shake it." She smiles happily, so glad she'd found it that morning.

"Frankly, I haven't a clue where the little jingle bell came from, only that it was in my medicine basket this morning. It might be useful to you; your hands are small enough to hold it. And it's cute, like you."

Then her face becomes curious. She remembers something, and screws up her courage, looking serious, "Strawbaby? Aoife told me it was okie to ask what people are. So.. please may I ask what you and Apple are? I've never seen anyone quite like the two of you."

[personal profile] spiderlillie 2020-04-29 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Vik giggles, charmed by Apple's prancing.

"Honestly, I have no idea where the bell came from Strawbaby, it was just *there*, ya know?" Vik giggles at Apple's antics, "I'm just glad I can bring some joy to you and Apple." she points in Apple's direction, "he's right happy! Maybe.. maybe I was supposed to find it for you? Or find one like the one you lost?"

She reads Strawbaby's speech bubble and nods, eyebrows rising, "Dollies made of gems. That is extra intriguing! All I know is, you're both very beautiful, and I am quite happy I met you."

Vik sits on the bed, gently moving things aside for herself. She looks at that pretty bathroom longingly and smiles.

"Alrighty my little friends, it is time for me bath. I'm quite ripe. And please, would you tell Mira and anyone else who helped put all this together that I thank them very, very much?"

Vik holds up the vest inspecting it a bit more, "This one puzzles me, but I'm game for an adventure!" She says with a quirky smile.

She strokes the little spider clasping her shawl, it releases and the shawl lays open a little. Vik looks wonderingly at the little being a moment. She is very humbled and reassured by it's understanding of her needs. She strokes it again in thanks, and gently lays it in the suitcase on top of everything.

"Strawbaby, this world is a wonder. So many new things I learn all the time, things I never dreamt of, never could've imagined." Vik turns to look at her, "You and Apple are two of those precious wonders I'm talking about. I couldn't have imagined anyone like you and Apple in a million lifetimes."

Vik smiles at them and wipes her misty eye. She feels that the Lord God has been so precious and good to her today. She has no words complete enough to thank Him for all His blessings.

"Thank you Strawbaby for all your help. And for being a kind friend."

Bathtime

[personal profile] spiderlillie 2020-05-04 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Vik smiles as she reads Strawbaby's bubble. "I'll do that then, thanks for telling me." She thumbs the little button thingie and speculates.

"Bye-bye you two, and thanks again!" she watches as Strawbaby and Apple leave. She hopes she sees them again.

To herself she says softly, "Well, time to shed this muu-muu and get on with it." she sighs feeling relaxed and at home, and gets things going in the comfy bathroom. "A baaaaath.. oh how nice. And a shower I can get into easy! Yay!"

She chuckles appreciatively as the bath seems to ease her nerves, mind and muscles all at once.

Vik can't wait to try on her new clothes and boots. She inwardly makes a note to find some way to thank Mira and everyone in a special way. She doesn't know how yet, but she knows the Lord will show her a way.

The house is quiet while she's under the water, there are none of the loud sounds that can be so alarming when one can hear only indistinctly past water sounds. It is warm enough that there are no shocks when one comes out from under the water to soap. But the smell of of food is becoming stronger, and quite distinctly over the lovely scent of wild strawberries is now discernible the scent of cooking lamb.

Vik sighs, so deeply refreshed, relaxed, and clean, just as she likes herself to be. She dries off and deodorizes. Then sits on the soft bed to dress. She takes her time, exploring how each piece of her clothing is made, making sure she positions everything as it should go.

While she's getting herself dressed, the aromas of a familiar food reaches her nose, but not quite her memory. "Oooh.. I *know* that smell.. that smells utterly amazing!"

She tries to grasp the elusive memory, and tries not to drool too. That is proving to be the most difficult.

The aroma is driving her nuts. Mainly because it smells soooo delicious! The other reason is because she knows that she knows *that* aroma, but she can't place it! As she ponders, she pulls on the first thick sock, delighting in it's cushy comfort.

"Oooh, man-o-man, now *that* is driving me goofy. Smells so delicious. I wish I could remember what that is though!" She shakes her head at herself as she pulls on the other thick sock, smoothing it along her leg.

Vik reasons that once she's finished getting dressed, maybe she can explore a bit and see if she can discover who's cooking, and just what it *is* they've made that smells so irresistable!

She stops pondering the foods she smells, and admires her new socks for a bit. She adores the feel of them. She can't help but notice how buttery they are on her over-sensitive feet!

Then she picks up the vest. She turns it this way and that, looking at it from every angle, trying to guess what it does when on.

She smiles and shrugs. She hasn't worn any stylsh vests since she was 20-something years old. The only other vest she wore was that orange, plastic safety vest she had to wear at work some decades back.

This vest wasn't like any of those. She smiles and puts it on, then zips it up. She stands to straighten the lay of her clothing, trying to look at herself this way and that.

She finally feels satisfied that she's got everything arranged right, and fingers the button at the bottom of the vest.

She takes a deep breath, "Well, here goes!", then she presses the button thingie...

The mystery of the clothes

[personal profile] random_xtras 2020-05-05 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Once the vest is zipped, that little rectangular thing with the button on it somehow shifts so that it's benearth the bottom of the zipper, and as Vik stands, she'll feel the socks stiffening along her legs and ankles, providing gentle but firm support.

And the vest. The moment the button is pressed, the black mesh vest vanishes, and a beautiful dark green dress unfolds around Vik. Three quarter length bell sleeves blossom around her arms, bright with delicate green and aqua floral embroidery. A full skirt with hem adorned by the same delicately worked vine suddenly swirls just above her ankles, and at the trim looking but comfortable waist is a belt with more of the embroidery. There are ample pockets inside the skirt, and those thick black socks have now become what looks like (but certainly doesn't feel like!) beautiful golden brown granny boots with pointed toes, spool heels, and golden tassels on the sides.

Everything happened so fast that it left Vik very much breathless and happily startled. She blinks and rubs her eyes, not quite believing what she saw, or thinks she saw, as it happened so fast, and so beautifully!

She stares at herself, once again turning every direction she can twist, trying to see it all. She sits rather abruptly on the bed, astonished, grinning like a kid at the carnival, heart racing in joy.

"Oh my goodness! It's all SO pretty! I can't believe all this, it's so gorgeous!!" She runs her hands down the sleeves, loving their cloth and length. She runs her fingers over all that lovely embroidery, very impressed with it's designs. The skill it declared of the embroiderer stuns her.

Vik pulls her feet up so she can see them, and is doubly astonished.. her socks turned into boots that she instantly fell in love with. They feel so wonderful, so perfect, like they'd been tailor made for her by hand! And she adores the way they complimented her dress.

Vik finds that tears are streaming down her face as she settles her feet back to the floor. It's not sad tears, but overwhelmingly joyful tears. Her heart is about to burst from gladness, joy, thankfulness, so... so very many wonderful feelings all at once!

Vik swiftly swipes the tears with both hands, then cups her eyes and face a moment with both hands, sincerely blessing and thanking her Lord for this very happy, wonderful blessing. She doesn't even have proper, complete enough words to thank Him, but she stumbles through it, tears flooding away.

She shudders when she sighs, still feeling awhirl. She dries her tears, the very happiest of smiles on her face. Vik rises to go to the bathroom mirror to do something with her hair. It wouldn't do to be wearing such lovely clothes, and still have wild hair.

As she stares at herself in the mirror, "Oh Mira, you have hugely blessed me, you and everyone." she says to herself, because of course no one is there to hear her. She mists up a little, wipes her tears with a warm, damp washrag, and tidies up her hair.

No one, except the Lord God Himself, and now the people of The Backwater, have ever been so kind, helpful and generous to her. It is hard for Vik not to cry when someone actually *is* kind to her. Especially when its this much kindness all at once! She's simply not used to so much gentleness and kindness, so much generosity. And all without guille, no one working some self-serving angle.

Vik's background thoughts ponder that if it were anywhere but the Backwater, she'd quickly suspect some sort of wicked pidgeon-drop being worked against her, as so many years before have been.

Vik breathes a silent and sincere prayer of thanks to her Lord that this place is not like her own world. She's intensely grateful for the break away from a world of wolves and snakes. Vik had long been exhausted of always seeming to be "a porkchop in a wolf cafe.", as she'd often referred to it.

She shakes herself from her dark ponderings. Shaking her head, she looks down at her beautiful dress, still not quite able to believe her eyes. Nothing seems so real as what's before her, incredible as it may seem. Vik chides herself mildly, it's so hard to just accept some things. But since she's been in the Backwater, she's getting less cynical, far less jaded and suspicious, as her world has schooled her to be.

Vik smiles. She sighs deeply, closing her eyes and shakes her head, looking down towards her feet. The only sensible thing to do is simply accept things, to quit expecting life and people here to be what she's gotten used to all her life.

If God can take care of her in her former world, then He's able to do the same here. Time to let go of some stuff she's gotten used to before. Time to get used to a new normal, the normal of the Backwater, which makes her grin ear to ear, eyes sparkling in happiness.

The smile on her face is so wide that it aches. But she doesn't care, her heart is so full of joy.

She finishes straightening up her hair, and returns to the bedroom. She puts on the shawl, laying it carefully just so. Then she reaches over and gently picks up the little sentient spider clasp.

Vik holds it up to her eyes and tells it a soft thank you, and places it where it can clasp her shawl.

She is hoping she doesn't go all weepy again. She giggles at herself, shaking her head. "Vik, you are too big a softie." And grabs her cane, making her way to the door from which all the scrumptious food aromas are coming from.

In quest of food smells

[personal profile] random_xtras 2020-05-12 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
The door to the hallway is still open a crack, and as Vik reaches that, the food smells intensify. If she pulls the door open and passes through, she'll find herself at the top end of a shortish hallway that has stairs to one side, and a door at the far end on the same wall as the one that Vik is at. The food smell will be very strong now, and there will come the sound of cooking from that other door on this floor.

Vik follows her nose, as well as her curiosity, which is about as strong as her will to find the cook, and learn what they've cooked.

"Knock-knock?" Vik says softly, not wanting to outright intrude, but hoping she can explore.

She grins and sniffs the wonderful aromas, "Whatever is cooking smells really amazing!" She peeks around a door.

In the kitchen.

[personal profile] random_xtras 2020-05-25 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"You don't need to knock, the kitchen belongs to everyone," says a tired sounding woman's voice. "But watch out, there's a dinosaur in here."

A trill echoes her words, and is followed by a series of bubbling gulps and piping chirps. There's some kind of translator working, because even though Vik hears those sounds, she also hears, "I'm a FRIEND. Didn't you hear her say nice things about your foody-stuff?"

"I'm sorry," says the woman. "I think you're talking to me, but I can't understand you."

She doesn't sound comfortable talking to whatever chirped and trilled, but she still laughs quietly at the little game buzzer sound that replies to her words.

If Vik peeks a little further, she'll see a plump, dark-haired young woman sitting at the table and slowly mixing something. The woman looks as tired as she sounds, with large dark circles under her brown eyes, and a weary slump to shoulders that look like they should be strong. The smile that she offers to Vik is reserved, but friendly and welcoming.

"If you like lamb meatball soup, you're welcome to share lunch with us," she says, lifting a hand to use the back of her wrist to push some curls back under the embroidered bandanna she's got tied over her hair. "I'm Esther Vartanian." A nod toward a heavy set young man with watchful dark eyes. "That's my husband Robert. He doesn't talk." She buries her face in the corner of her arm and coughs softly, then excuses herself and sits up again, her attention going toward the stove as the bubbling and trilling and chirping starts up again.

And there by the stove, standing on a chair and holding a wooden spoon, is a green, five foot tall raptor dinosaur wearing an apron and a bowler hat. His eyes are bright, and he's waving with one foreleg.

"Esther can't understand me, because she has no imagination. But she's a good cook. If you're hungry you want some of this soup," he's saying.

Vik hears a weary sounding soul, and enters the kitchen. Then she double-takes as the lady's words astound her. She cocks her head slightly.

"Did you say.. lamb?!" She all but dances, were she able to that is. But she can't, and what she manages to do is rather silly looking, but it once could've been a sassy slide. Maybe.

"I *knew* i knew that aroma, but couldn't remember what i was smelling, that smells awesome, and yes please, I would love some of your soup!"

Vik smiles widely and totters further in. Then the lady's words and the sight of a dinosaur come together in her lamb-muddled thoughts.

She stares mouth open at the creature holding the spoon, then she snaps her mouth shut. She smiles and waves to the dino cook, and to herself she muses that the Backwater did it again. "I am very glad to meet you, Esther, Robert and Friend!"

Vik looks over to Esther, "I know I'm new here, but could I help you some way? Maybe i could do that or something else, and you can take a break for a while, if you explain what for me to do." Vik knows how weariness looks and feels, and Esther looks extra tired. Vik's heart goes out to her.

Vik props her cane against her belly to free both hands, shoves her sleeves upwards above her elbows, and waits patiently for directions.

She smiles at the dino with the spoon and gently motions an upward finger, hoping to convey the idea, 'please wait a moment' to him. As much as her appetite screams for lamb, her heart tells her to help Esther first.

Esther studies Vik for a moment, then shakes her head and nods to an empty chair at the table, indicating that the older woman should sit.

"A break won't help me," she says quietly. "I feel like this right after I wake up. But thanks for offering."

Then she looks up and smiles love and approval as Robert brings over a plate, salad bowl, glass, and cutlery to the table place that she indicated to Vik.

Re: In the kitchen.

[personal profile] spiderlillie 2020-06-14 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Vik listens to Esther and nods in acceptance. She totters carefully to the indicated place at their table, and sits as carefully as she can, her bad joints popping all the way.

She looks at Esther from the corner of her eye, the poor woman looks utterly spent. She deeply wishes there were something she might do to help her. Waking up feeling that way is familiar to Vik. Before she was placed on medication for her diabetes, she felt the same way every morning.

She smiles and thanks Robert as he sets her place with cutlery, plate and other needed things.

At that moment, her silly belly growls in such a manner that it's impossible to miss. Vik blushes and tucks her head slightly, gasping an apology. "Oh! Oh man. Soooo sorry for that. My stomach has no manners at all."

Vik's hands flap sideways in frustration as she stares down at her rebellious innards. Her face goes fully red as her stomach continues growling like a grumpy cat. Vik folds both arms across her middle in a useless attempt to cover up her offending belly.

She closes her eyes and groans in embarrassment. "Good.. grieeef.. I'm sorry about that." and sighs in resignation.

Sometimes, there's just nothing one can do about their crazy, noisy internals, nor the moments they choose to announce themselves.
