The sun shone softly through sheer curtains, illuminating though not touching the two figures that lay on the bed, one under and one on top of the blankets. Black hair contrasted with white pillow linens, and soft breathing made slight movements.

Brenda snapped to wakefulness, then frowned without opening her eyes as she realized there were arms around her. She listened, then sniffed before moving experimentally.

She leaned down the stairs and kissed him on the cheek, then put her arms around his neck and lay her head on his shoulder, hanging from him for a moment as she moved her feet to a lower step.

He chuckled and wrapped his arms around her, holding her close and laying his cheek against her hair.

"Now that was worth that infernal run," he grinned.

She quirked a grin and just savored the feeling of being held for a few moments, then gently let go and pushed away. "We should go to lunch before it gets cold."

He sighed and let go of her.

"Lead away, my fairest," he said.

She smiled and took his hand, bringing him up the remaining stairs and then through the house to the kitchen, where Clark sat in the breakfast nook with his nose in the paper. Brenda slid into the seat across from him, then looked up and smiled at Porthos as she waited for the Musketeer to sit next to her.

He took his place close at her side imediatly, then gently rubbed the back of her hand with his thumb.
