The sun shone softly through sheer curtains, illuminating though not touching the two figures that lay on the bed, one under and one on top of the blankets. Black hair contrasted with white pillow linens, and soft breathing made slight movements.

Brenda snapped to wakefulness, then frowned without opening her eyes as she realized there were arms around her. She listened, then sniffed before moving experimentally.

Brenda glanced at Clark as he gave a good-natured chuckle, then toward Prudence as the butler said without turning, "Thank you, Master Porthos. Would you care for anything else? Bread? Something to drink?"

"I'm all set... unless you have wine?" he asked, eyebrows going up hopefully.

She went to the fridge and selected the right one for the meal, then poured a large glass and brought it over to set by his plate.

"I call for another round of thanks," he said, eyebrows going up as he looked at her. "Thanks to the most wonderfully prepared and beautiful woman in this world..." he paused. "Except for Brenda, of course," he offered her a smile.

She gave a small smile and returned to the kitchen counter, where she'd begun chopping vegitables for supper.

Brenda reached past him and snagged the glass to steal a sip.

"Where's the fun in that?" She quirked an eyebrow over the glass, then set it down hastily as Prudence cleared her throat.

"Now that's interesting," he chuckled, taking it back for a sip.
