The sun shone softly through sheer curtains, illuminating though not touching the two figures that lay on the bed, one under and one on top of the blankets. Black hair contrasted with white pillow linens, and soft breathing made slight movements.

Brenda snapped to wakefulness, then frowned without opening her eyes as she realized there were arms around her. She listened, then sniffed before moving experimentally.

Clark looked back and forth between them and frowned, unsure of what they were talking about. "Guys, keep it clean, okay?"

Brenda gave him a quizzical look and he felt dumb.

Porthos arched an eyebrow. "And were you to suggest my fairest anything but, I would have to challenge and bury you in a duel."

"Chill," Brenda told him softly, using a word she'd picked up while undercover. "Clark's Family."

"My love, I'd take you on in order to protect your honor," he smiled.

"Oh really?" Her fingers closed over a sizeable chunk of the skin over his hip.

"No," he begged, wincing and ducking away even as he paused. "I mean, yes, but no, please don't!"

She gave him a wicked smirk, but then glanced at Prudence as the butler cleared her throat and let him go. "Is the meeting over?"

"Are you going to the charity ball this evening?" asked the redhaired woman. "They are counting on your attendance."

Brenda frowned. "I said I wasn't."

"You said you weren't unless you had a date," corrected Prudence, glancing at Porthos.

Brenda's frown increased, but she turned to him. "Do you want to go with me to a social event tonight?"
