The sun shone softly through sheer curtains, illuminating though not touching the two figures that lay on the bed, one under and one on top of the blankets. Black hair contrasted with white pillow linens, and soft breathing made slight movements.

Brenda snapped to wakefulness, then frowned without opening her eyes as she realized there were arms around her. She listened, then sniffed before moving experimentally.

"Are you sure?" he asked, wondering what the other two were on about.

"Quite certain." She didn't turn to look at him, but the set of her shoulders and the crispness of her movements let him know that he was tresspassing on her territory.

"I'm sorry," he said, suddenly undersanding and slumping back in his seat. "I meant no intrusion," he said, clearly unhappy with having offended her.

"I know," she said, amiable again as she brought over a plate of warm chocolate chunk oatmeal cookies.
