BW 'verse. Maximal base. Windracer.

"And there were no trees. And no flowers. Everything was metal." Windracer's dark eyes were fixed on Optimus' face as she snuggled back against his chest.

"Metal and other non-organic things." He nodded, remembering as he always did when he told the story. Or rather now, after so many years of hearing it, when he and Windracer told it to each other. "But it was just as alive as this world."

"And there were people there." Windracer's mouth twitched at one corner as she tried to imagine Cybertron. "And they were like you."

"Maximals and Predacons. Yes." He looked out through the wide windows at the stars that shone thickly over the Axalon, wishing again that he could see his far off homeworld and point it out to the little girl. His spark ached a bit to think that she'd never see it. But he doubted that any of them could go back now, after everything that had happened here.

"Dinobot, Silverbolt, Blackarachnia, and Waspinator used to be Predacons." Windracer followed his gaze. "But now Dinobot, Silverbolt, and Blackarachnia are Maximals, and Waspinator and Hawkmoth are civilians." She fell silent for a moment, then stirred slightly. "And some day I'll fight in the Beast Wars too."

"No." Optimus blinked and looked down at her with dismay. "No, Windracer. It's not your war. You're human."

The ten year old's face darkened into a scowl. "I'm a Maximal, just like the rest of the tribe. Just like my mother, and Abel, and everyone else. We always fight with you, just like you always fight with us. And you know that. You're just saying this because you don't want me to get hurt."

"I...." Optimus stared at her, wondering where the cute little kid who'd hung on his every word had gone.

"Don't worry. It's a father thing. Or a father of a girl thing, anyway." She shrugged, then turned and wrapped her arms around his chest. "But you'll see. Someday I'll be as great a leader as you and my mother."

Father... thing? He blinked and voiced it out loud. "Father thing? But I'm...."

"My father. Even if we are two different kinds of people." She grinned up at him, affection dancing in her eyes. "You've done all the father stuff. Including trying to teach me something too big and then covering up for it to my mother so she wouldn't kick your butt after I got hurt."

"Uh...." Optimus remembered that incident and closed his mouth with a snap. "Right."

"Don't worry. She knows."

He blinked, and then let out a sigh of relief. "Good. But still...."

He stopped and looked into those bright dark eyes and that cheerful, slightly bratty but respectful grin and sighed. "Maybe the war will be over before you get old enough."

Windracer laughed and hugged him again, then tilted her head to listen to Cheetor and Rattrap wrangling in the hall before she bounced over and flopped down on the bed that had been set up for her to use during visits soon after she'd stopped depending on her mother's milk. Optimus followed, and as he had since she was tiny he carefully tucked the fur blankets around her, then leaned down to give her a gentle kiss on the forehead.

"I love you, Optimus," she said softly, as she always did, then added, "Don't worry, okay?"

"I'll try." He smiled and gave her a last pat, then yelled at the miscreants in the hall as he turned and went to his own bed. They snarked back cheerfully, and then decided to go looking for beer.

Optimus facepalmed as he lay down, then turned his attention back to the stars.

Primus, he thought, frowning slightly. Protect her.

Across the room the child who called him father curled up and dropped easily to sleep, content with her world and everything in it. And after a few moments, still frowning, he followed suit.
