BW 'verse. Axalon and village. Found out.

Codeak stood and frowned up at the sky, absently listening to the frank voice of the mech beside him.

"...So that's why we have to stay here," finished Optimus Primal. "Now that Megatron knows the old ones are here they'll never be safe till we manage to catch him and lock him away."

Codeak nodded, thinking that there was something else that Primal wasn't telling him. He might not have seen his former ward in years, but he still found the younger mech as easy to scan as a datapad. However, he also had faith in Primal, and knew that if he was hiding something it had to be for a good reason.

"It must be hard, staying out of sight and trying to make yourself fit in," he noted, watching a pair of Velociraptors scrap over to one side of the clearing that held the fallen Axalon. "Have you ever seen any sign of the powerful beings from the stars that the old human legends tell about?"

"Dinobot, Lockjaw! How many times do I have to tell you...!" Primal facepalmed as the quarreling dinosaurs stopped snapping and snarling and started snuggling.

"Get a room!" Rattrap laughed from his perch up on the ship.

"Keep your filthy sss comments to your sssself, vermin!" retorted Dinobot, highly offended.

Then he yelped as Lockjaw gave him a solid chomp to the flank and went after her, hissing angrily.

Optimus shook his head as they vanished into the nearby small valley and turned back to his mentor. "I'm sorry, what were you saying?"

Codeak just chuckled, and then looked over to where Rhinox was telling the black femme called Thundermoon about a little purple flower they'd found in the grass. "At least the crew is able to form some relationships. That has to make things easier while you're stuck here."

"Yes it...." Primal froze as a small figure suddenly swooped down and attached itself to Rhinox, anxiously telling him that Naomi's baby was turned wrong and that the midwife needed his help now!

Codeak watched as the Maximal medical officer straightened and asked the child a couple questions before turning and running into the Axalon, then watched as the little girl shot a spooked and guilty look toward him before swiftly flying away.

Silence fell over the little clearing, broken only by the sound of Rattrap moving to where he could hide behind one of Sentinel's turrets.

Then Codeak cleared his vocalizer. "Optimus?"

"Yes, sir?" Primal didn't dare look at him.

"Does that child have a spark?"

"..Yes."

"Do you mind telling me how that happened?"

"Do you remember that Vok experiment I mentioned?"

"What exactly did that experiment entail?"

Primal sighed. "I don't know. But I know that during the course of it I found myself in the body of a human man in suburban 21 century America. And that man was married... and his wife was expecting. Only the wife and the child weren't just part of the illusion."

Codeak sucked in air and turned his head to look down at him. "She's yours?"

Primal squared his jaw, red optics holding a protective light that suddenly made everything clear in his mentor's mind. "She is."

"Which is the other reason you're staying here. To protect her and care for her." Codeak frowned slightly.

"Yes, sir," said Primal firmly.

"And you were hiding this from me."

"I was."

"Did you think I'd do something to harm the girl?" Codeak's expression grew stern.

"I...." Optimus faltered. "Didn't think about it either way. But I've thought long and hard on what the Maximal Council would do if they found out about her."

"So... because the Council is a bunch of close-minded glitches, you tried keeping me from meeting my granddaughter and the femme who helped create her?" said Codeak softly, his deep rough voice full of emotion.

Primal stared at him.

The older mech shook his head and put a hand on his shoulder, squeezing it gently. "I never found you. The Axalon and the Predacon ship it was pursuing were probably both destroyed. And the reason it took me so long to come back is because it took me awhile to get my shuttle to work again. I mourn my ward. But I'm confident that he died in the line of duty, as a hero." He smiled slightly, his gaze holding pride. "Now... when do I get to meet them?"

Optimus stared a little more, then shook himself and blinked.

"As soon as we get to the village," he said quietly, wiping quickly at his optics with his arm.

"Good." Codeak brightened. "Is she much like you? Has she ever...?"

Rattrap watched them go, his eyes wide with surprise and relief, then took a quick glance around and pulled out a handful of the cherries that Rhinox had wanted to use for a cake later.
