ANH. Undisclosed Location in Space. VIP cabin. Sunrise
Random is sleeping the sleep of the exhausted and pushed to the limit suddenly brought to safety and put on the most incredibly comfortable bed that he's ever seen. His head is on a fold of the big soft rug thing that Kia has made a cave out of on the foot of the bed, and the sound of her singing to him and talking with Murphy has ceased to really register because of how deeply he's sleeping. There is mud in his dream, because that's the only soft thing he's known till now. But the mud is nice and isn't getting into his joints. It's just warm and comfortable.
Random takes no thought how odd it is to enjoy this mud, but it's nice to be in something warm and soft after everything he's been through in the past while.
A hand carefully brushes at his face, and a male voice says with sympathy, "Is mud really the only softness you've ever gotten to experience?"
"Hmm?" Random makes the half-asleep questioning sound of the way too comfortable.
"You've never felt anything soft besides mud?" The voice is young and holds laughter, but the sympathy is there along with a bit of sadness.
Maybe Random should open his optic shutters? Manages to look at the other person blearily and blink a couple of times.
Nope, Random is still not awake.
The owner of the voice is tall, slenderish, though broad shouldered. He looks young, and is painted in a tawny colour. His eyes are green, and seem a lot older than he looks. "Can you talk to me yet?"
Random blinks a couple more times and then reluctantly sits up and rubs at his optics. "Maybe."
"Sorry. You can rest again soon. But we need to talk." The tawny mech settles from his crouch so that he's sitting on his skidplate with his knees hugged to his chest in a comfortable way. "I'm Link."
And somehow, he seems familiar.
Random frowns. He didn't recognize the name. He knows that for sure, but then why is he . . . ? "What about?"
"What's happening. What's happened." Link sobers, the sadness in his eyes deepening but becoming mixed with hope. "What's going to happen." He glances over to watch a misty Kia busily assembling small communicators as she talks to a vague little black shape that mews.
Random's suddenly not sure he's going to like this conversation. Absently looks over at Kia, glad that he's finally able to keep her in his line of sight again. He didn't know how much that had pained him until they parted what seemed so long ago.
Link watches Kia for a few moments, then looks back to Random. "So how do you feel about this whole Primus thing?"
Random frowns thoughtfully and then looks at Link. "Still a bit baffled. Primus put her in that asteroid field for me. I didn't even really believe in the guy. I mean, Sneaker did, but . . ."
Link gives a little snerk. "Maybe she was his way of reaching out so you could?"
Random starts to say something and then stops and then tries again. "But why, though? Why'd he make her an astrotech, so I'd have to take her and feel close to her? Sneaker was much more deserving."
"Easy. Sneaker deserved something else."
Random blinks and gives Link a look of surprised disbelief. "What?"
Link looks back at him soberly. "Peace. A home that won't be blown up. Kids to teach. Death's not always the end for Transformers, you know."
Random looks down as he thinks that over. Those things did sound like something Sneaker deserved.
But what about the mech's dreams?
"He's working on not worrying about you." Link grins a little. "And there's a little blue lady heading his way. She's not there yet. But she's on the way."
"Oh." Part of Random is relieved to hear that Sneaker missed him. It would have felt weird to him to hear that he hadn't after how long Sneaker's been friends with him. He smiles with relief at the news of Sneaker's future sparkmate. "Good."
"And he's helping to raise another reality's Kia." Link's eyes twinkle slightly. Yes. Sneaker got a Kia of his own.
Random blinks. "Wait. He's . . ." One, if Sneaker's dead, how is he having a Kia and a wife. And two, how is he having a Kia. There's only one of her.
Link face palms, turning his head slightly so that he can do so with his knees still up. "Didn't you understand? He's not dead. He's somewhere else, but very alive."
". . . Oh." Nope. He's still confused. Yes, even though he's been to the Nexus before. He wrote that off as a dream. He doesn't have an explanation for Kia meeting another him, either.
"You might be able to see him someday, after Primus is fully awake. And still come back home."
"Oh." Random thinks seeing Sneaker again would be nice, even if he's not sure how. He never got to properly say goodbye.
Link snerks softly again. "And he'll finally be able to give you the wax sweets he's been making."
Random smiles. That sounds like something his friend would do!
"He's still finding you Cybertron Sunrises, too, though now he can save up credit from his wages and buy premium jumbo ones."
Random's optics go wide. Those sound so good! You might need to pull him down, Link, he's flying up to food heaven.
Link laughs at the other mech's reaction. "So you have a reward to look forward to after this is all over. And you know what? You're going to get that reward."
Oh, when was the last time Random had a really good one? Forever it feels like.
Then Link's comment pulls him back to the present and he looks at the other mech a bit skeptically, "Really?"
"Really." Link looks him in the eye. "You better feel special. I don't give spoilers to everyone."
Which brings the next question Random feels like he needs to ask. "Why are you giving me 'spoilers'?"
Link sighs. "Post Traumatic Stress is beep. And we need you. We can't afford to have you break short of the goal."
Link could say that again. Random frowns. "But why do you need me? I'm just a simple astrotech who'd like to stay out of Imp optics and there's been nothing but trouble since the moment I found her. I love her, but I don't understand why we need to be in the middle of all this."
"Because Primus sent Kia to be a bridge, and regardless of how you feel you are the bot best suited to caring for her and helping her grow."
Random frowns, remembering his conversation with Sneaker back when he first got her. "Because I know how dangerous the world can be for an astrotech?"
Link shakes his head slightly. "Because you need her."
Random blinks his optic shutters. "I . . . need her?"
"Yeah." Link stretches the word out slightly. "Tell me I'm wrong."
"Tell me how you're not."
Link makes an impatient gesture with one hand. "Think about it."
Random absently glances in Kia's direction and tries to figure how out how he "needs" her. In a non-selfish way. Nope, can't think of one.
Link shakes his head. "Keep thinking on it til you understand." He too glances toward the youngster and her playmate.
