Fluß poked the slab of beef that lay in a bowl on the counter and found it satisfactorily thawed.

She put her ears back, then flicked them toward the doors, listening again for Victor's return. "(He should be back by now,)" she said to Peter, who was quietly smacking on his fist in his sling. "(He said that this was going to be an easy mission.)"

Ears back again, she went to the back door and listened again, one hand absently smoothing the long, sparkly, blue and green tie-dye skirt that she wore before it went up to tuck her white streak behind her left ear.

The baby's presence kept him from lighting up a stogie and he frowned and grumbled as the door closed behind them and he turned to the taller man. "What the @#$%&'s got inta you, Creed?"

"Hmm?" Creed said, looking up from his child before pointing a bit downwind in the yard. "Y' cn smoke there, runt. This kid's tough. Any wiff he catcheds won't hurt him, he's got his ma's genes n' the breeze t' protect him."

"Then waddya cuddlin' 'im so close for? Looks like yer scared he'll freeze." His eyes narrowed with concern as he saw the baby actually shiver and heard the little thing give a fretful whimper.

Victor growled slightly as he wrapped his coat around him for.

"Smoke can't hurt 'im. The cold can. One moment," he said, going back in and returning a moment later minus the babe. "You still got anythin' t' say?"

"What'ya mean?" he frowned, looking at him with his pure white eyes.

"Jes' what I said. Whaddya think yer doin' here?" He puffed irritably on his cigar.

"I live here," he said, slightly amused. "With me wife n' kid. Didn't ya get the memo, runt?"

"You ain't the settlin' down type. 'N wattyerya gonna do when the skirt starts gittin' old?"

"I am now," he said gruffly, then chuckled. "She'll outlast me, I'm pretty sure. Dang tough, too."

"Outlast ya?" He'd noticed something strange about her scent....

"She's gonna be around. Her people are long-lasting and strong," he said. "I'm onna have her with me till the world ends."
