Futureknight verse: Wayne Manor: Different Bat-Time, Different Bat-Channel

Daylight filtered through the window, rousing Helena from her sleep.  With a grumble, she pulled the covers up higher and attempted to bury her head in her pillow.  She wouldn't exactly say she'd had a good night's rest--too many memories associated with the Manor--but she had slept about as well as anyone who sometimes kept odd hours could.

When it became clear that she was not going to be able to get back to sleep, she reluctantly came out from under the covers and gasped.

This was not the same room she'd gone to sleep in.

Helena blinked in surprise. "Okay, so I wasn't wrong about the Three Musketeers connection...?"

"Nope. That's Porthos the Pirate." She smiled down at the sword, then traced the R that was set in the curling basket hilt.

"There's got to be a story behind that," she said.

"He followed me home, so I kept him." Brenda's usually rather hard face showed her feelings for the big man.

"It's more than that, isn't it? You love him."

"He's my husband," she said softly.

"Puts you ahead of me. I still can't get my feelings for this one guy sorted out..."

"Oh?" She looked at her sideways, ignoring the sound of cheerful boasting from the dressing room.

"Harry Sims. He's the DA for Gotham. Great guy, really... But I don't know if I can do the crime-buster thing and maintain a relationship. Dad would say that life comes before the costume... I don't even know how Harry'd take finding out about this."

-Life before the costume....- Brenda looked down at the sword, contemplating how strange it sounded to her. "Guess I'm lucky. Porthos not only knows, he's part of the Clan."

"You are lucky, Brenda."

"Though watching him while he tries so hard to suppress his natural instinct to protect me can hurt sometimes," she said soberly, her hand closing gently over the hilt of the sword. "But still, what I've heard other Bats say about their Robins keeping them in the light... he does that for me. Without him I wouldn't have any reason to feel."

"Dad always did say he really started becoming less of creature of fear than one of hope after he took Dick on as his ward."

She smiles. "I've got Dick, and my teammates in the JSA. I've got it pretty good."
