Futureknight verse: Wayne Manor: Different Bat-Time, Different Bat-Channel

Daylight filtered through the window, rousing Helena from her sleep.  With a grumble, she pulled the covers up higher and attempted to bury her head in her pillow.  She wouldn't exactly say she'd had a good night's rest--too many memories associated with the Manor--but she had slept about as well as anyone who sometimes kept odd hours could.

When it became clear that she was not going to be able to get back to sleep, she reluctantly came out from under the covers and gasped.

This was not the same room she'd gone to sleep in.

With a smile, Helena gets up and follows after Prudence.

She led her out of the room and down the hall a little ways, to one of the secret entrances to the Cave. The elevator was swift and silent, and they soon found themselves walking on the stone floor of a much different subterranean headquarters than Helena would remember, though the trophies were there and joined by others.

Prudence stopped as always before the long row of empty Bat suits, her hand going out to touch the glass of a few of the cases as she remembered the men, and women, who wore them.

Helena's eyes lingered over a few of the cases as well. Here was, in a strange way, family. Cross-time relatives and compatriots.

"...Some of the ones with female names don't really look like they were designed to be worn by women," she sai

"None of them were intended to look female." Prudence looked around from where she stood in front of Ronnie's red mech suit, centuries of sadness showing in her eyes. "All their wearers were known as Batman."

"But... why? Why not Batwoman or Batgirl or whatever?"

"Batman was the legend," said Prudence simply. "There were Batgirls, but the name was retired after the grizzly death of the last young woman to bear the mantle, much to the dismay of generations of young women who have aspired to the position."

She nodded to the row of suits that stood next to the ones labeled Robin and Nightwing... and a lone one labeled 'Batfreak'.

"I... guess," Helena says. "I'm more of the opinion that nobody but Dad could possibly have been Batman. Better to fight for his ideals, than try to ride on the name."

"Better to ride on a name than be attacked as an unknown," was the practical response. "Or that was Master Bruce's reasoning."

"I suppose. Just can't really wrap my brain around it. Dick and I had a long conversation about it once, actually."

"Master Dick always took Master Bruce's best interests to heart."

Something in the way she said that made Helena curious. "You talk as though you were there."
