Sam's Reality: Cape Canaveral, Florida - Kennedy Space Center
Leeroy wasn't too sure how the night guard at the Kennedy Space Center had acquired Sam's name. He assumed it was the Internet - everything's the Internet's fault these days - but he couldn't be too sure, as the guy looked to be about sixty and the type who wouldn't touch a computer to save his life.
"They're freakin' out the dogs," he said in a Southern accent. "And we ain't been able to photograph 'em, either." He pointed to the large behemoth of metal that could be seen a few miles in the distance. "They're always there."
It was, Leeroy recognized, launch pad 39-B. Jeimu had launched from there not even a year ago.
Why freaks were hanging out around launchpads, Leeroy wasn't certain. He turned to Sam and asked quietly, "What d'you make of all this, eh?"

"You sure this is safe, Grandma?"
"Hunters don't come out in the light." Sam took a deep breath, then switched automatically to Latin and talked to God for moment before pointing her finger at the nest and pronouncing all bonds and boundaries broken.
The brightness of the scratches faded and the rebar started to list as the webs disintegrated.
And Sam suddenly felt Hunter very close.
She frowned and looked toward a big metal shed that stood nearby, then scowled. "There they are. Let's go see how they're getting in and out."

"Ladies first," he said, gesturing.

They circled it in silence that was broken by Rob's low 'whoa' as they came to a huge hole ripped through the metal of the back wall.
"How did they miss that?" Sam scowled, looking at the clumps of dark fur on the edges of the rent.

He contemplated the hole for a few seconds. "We goin' in there?"

Then her eyes went wide and she stepped back and to the side. "@#$$%&@! It's a portal...."
Her words were cut off as she whirled to face the Hunter that had come up behind them in the full light of day. Up went the shotgun, only to fly away at a blow from one clawed hand. The thing's other hand slammed into her stomach, and she doubled over and fell.
"NO!" cried Rob, filling the thing with silver.

...would you just die already?
It wasn't that Leeroy had any gifts, but his mind was scanning, searching for any sign from Sam. Something to make him believe she was still alive.
Because it was oddly silent right now.

Then he looked toward where Sam lay, his eyes wide with horror at the lack of thought from her.

Now Leeroy focused his attention on Sam. Kneeling beside her, he checked her vital signs.
"Come on," he breathed. "Get up..."
