Kurt appeared out of nowhere, landing in a grassy meadow that was surrounded by mountains and bathed in sunlight.

The drunken man swayed, then looked around. This was... his meadow.

He fell to his knees, then looked around, bowing his head.

"Vat is going on?" he asked, assuming the strange woman had followed him, or brought him to where she was.

"Not too much." A tall figure stood and turned to look at him, the sunlight glinting off a high-shouldered black cloak and toffe-coloured skin. "Like I said. I'm nosy and was worried about you." Long pointed ears perked forward as solid black eyes studied him. "I'm Joy."

"Kurt Vagner," Kurt said testily, putting hands up to his head. "I do not suppose you could bring Spencer here? I vould love to show ze both of you vat it wrong."

"You really think the blue-haired girl would even look at you after that?" She quirked one brow.

"Shut up!" Kurt snarled, whirling on her, looking desperate, shattered, and above all, furious. "I did more for her zen anyvon! I vas true ven nobody else vas! Und zat spoiled brat just valks in und steals her?!"

She didn't even blink, only walked closer and put an arm out past what he could now see were massive draconian wings to lay one delicate hand on his shoulder.

He looked a her and almost flinched from the super hot hand, then crumpled to his knees, breath ragged as he gasped for air, so overcome by the friendly touch that his heart almost stopped beating.

Joy knelt and pulled him into the shelter of her wings, murmuring softly in a language that sounded like the ancestor of German and Dutch as she rocked him slightly.

He trembled but did not cry, wrapping his arms around himself as he shook.

"It hurts, I know," said Joy softly, laying her cheek on his head and continuing to rock.

"I could haff made her happy," he croaked. "I vould have given her everzing und more... I loved her, I cared for her! Und she just valked avay... vat did Reid ever do for her? What could he zat I could not?"

"The heart's a strange thing. Even after nearly three hundred years I don't understand how it vorks."

"First Ororo... now Mara... I do not understand," Kurt's head came up and he looked at her, for the first time revealing the silent tear streaks running down his cheeks. "I only vant to help... I only vant to love...."

She gently cupped his face in one hand, rubbing at the tear tracks with a thumb as her black eyes glistened with sympathetic tears. "Ach."

He looked at her, then made a split-second decision and leaned forward, planting his lips on hers.

She started, but then kissed him tenderly before pushing away. "Ja, I could love you easily. But I'm not going to play with your heart when you're drunk und hurting."

"Please," he said softly, putting his hand against her cheek, eyes searching her face as he trembled. "Please... do not say no... liebe...."

She bit her lip with one pointed tooth, her face still impassive though her eyes spoke volumes. "I'm not."

"Ja..." Kurt moaned softly, and went limp in her grasp, turning his face up to the sky as his entire body shook.

Joy wrapped her wings a little more tightly around him and just held him as he wept.

He leaned forward to cling to her, putting his face against her shoulder as his hand threaded through her hair.

"Mien liebe," he said, trembling. "Mien....who are you?"

"I'm Joy," she repeted softly. "In the custom of my moeder's people I vas named for who und vhat I am. And in the custom of my vader's I vas named for one he loved dearly. They vere Sir James Howlett und Anmut of the Seevölker."

He looked at her and touched her cheek, then kissed her again before his eyes rolled to the back of his head and he passed out.

She sighed and stood, lifting him as though he weighed nothing. Finding the teleporter where he'd left it, she adjusted the setting, then took them away to a better place for him to sleep.
