Transformers-'verse, Nellis AFB, investigating

When she stepped off of the Cessna and walked out onto the flight line at Nellis AFB, Vanessa Raymond didn't know what to expect.

She'd dealt with the military before - as an aide to the Secretary of Defense, such dealings were an inevitability. However, when one threw giant alien robots into the mix, things got decidedly weird.

She wondered if her training in forensics was going to come in handy at all here. She was used to blood spatters and DNA samples, dead bodies and mysterious causes of death. All she had in this case was one human victim who had already been buried (cause of death? bullet wound from standard M-24 US army-issue sniper rifle), and a mechanical victim who... well, she hadn't exactly figured that out quite yet.

The plane's engines shift from idling to silence and it's only then that Vanessa heard the rumbling of another engine.

This was from a very large, very good-looking Peterbilt big-rig, with a custom paint job that was almost comical. She grabbed her luggage and strode purposefully over to it.

"Afternoon," she said, standing below its driver-side door with a grin. "Mr. Peters."

"Uh huh." He stops to look down at a long black scorch mark in the dirt.

Optimus stops as well, then carefully lowers her to the ground. "This is where it happened. The remains of the wires are still there."

She climbs out of his hand and walks toward what's left of the trap.

"How long prior to the incident did you notice these being here?"

"Hmmm, a week?" He kneels nearby but out of the way. "They'd been there for awhile before I saw them, though. Maybe as long as we have."

"A little after," says Ironhide.

She squats in the desert dirt to get a closer look, grabbing a rock and tossing it against the frayed ends of the wire to see if it's still live.

It wasn't. So she got even closer to touch it, expecting to not recognize what it was, or to find that it was an advanced alloy wire.

"It's just... a powerline." She shook her head. "But where does it lead?"

"There's a cave in the gully over there." Optimus points, his arm blocking out the sun. "The surge blew out the power source, and I'm afraid one of my mechs shot it before I could stop them, but the remains are still there."

"Remind me not to get Bee mad," mutters Ironhide, lifting his head to scan the area.

Vanessa frowns, then straightens. "Maybe I should talk to your medic first."

"Alright." He turns his head toward the base. "He's awake."

She nods curtly, suddenly now all business.

Vanessa was enjoying the novelty of being in the company of the Autobots very much, but she still has a job to do.
