She looks up at her husband the moment her feet hit the ground. The air is slightly cool; dusk has fallen and there's the distinct aroma of salt on the air. Typical seaside night.

"So," she says quietly, "what exactly did you say to him?"

Not long after this exchange, a still-sleepy Jeimu walks out onto her deck in bare feet to go get the morning paper.

She's almost back at her front door when she notices what's parked in her driveway and does a complete about turn.

"Why are you stalking me?"

Ratchet replies with silence, hoping that she'll notice the peace offerings that he's surrounded himself with.

"Oh, don't pretend you can't talk like that," Jeimu snaps. "You know, you were a jerk yesterday."

"Yes. I know," he says softly.

Now she's laughing. "And so you expect to be able to offer yourself up for vehicular abuse and that'll make it all better?"

"No. But I hope it will make you feel better." His voice is still low.

"Do you really think I'm that much of a simpleton?"

"No," he says morosely.

"Then," she says with a sigh, sitting down on the steps of the porch, facing him, "what do you think of me?"

It's a question she's asked many people many times before.

And their answers have made or broken many friendships.
