John's Earth. St. Francis Memorial hospital.

The room is dim and silent except for a soft beeping and the sound of quiet breathing. There are two people in the room, one laying on the hospital bed, hooked to IVs, oxygen, and the heart monitor; the other slumped in the rocking chair next to the bed with a slightly blood-stained bandage wrapped around his head.

There's an odd peace surrounding the two men, one that makes the nurses who check on them do so siently and either linger or hurry away. But even with that hovering peace the face of the man in the chair is troubled, as though he walks in uneasy dreams.

John bites off what he nearly said pertaining to where he wished that other John Winchester would go. Instead he only repeats firmly, "He's wrong."

"I'm just so sick of it..." he mutters. "I always stay when he needs me, make sure he's safe..." A shaky breath. "I deal with him...a psychotic brother who wants to kill me painfully or turn me to his side of things..." he buries his face into the older man's shirt.

"I'm just so tired..."

John lays him back in the hospital bed and pulls the blankets over him, eyes watchful. "Get some sleep. I'll be here when you wake up."

He doesn't argue, though his cheeks are still stained with tears. He looks like he might drift off but...

"What if he's right?" he whispers, voice barely sounding out.

"He's not." John gently hooks the oxygen tube back over Dean's ears and under his nose, then smooths his hair back. "He's not."

And he's grateful for that, even if he can't voice it at the moment. His breathing is raspy again, and his eyes flutter shut, but not before he takes the older Winchester's hand.

"...stay with me t..till I fall asleep?"
