John's Earth. St. Francis Memorial hospital.

The room is dim and silent except for a soft beeping and the sound of quiet breathing. There are two people in the room, one laying on the hospital bed, hooked to IVs, oxygen, and the heart monitor; the other slumped in the rocking chair next to the bed with a slightly blood-stained bandage wrapped around his head.

There's an odd peace surrounding the two men, one that makes the nurses who check on them do so siently and either linger or hurry away. But even with that hovering peace the face of the man in the chair is troubled, as though he walks in uneasy dreams.

John turns to see what he's talking about and feels the blood leave his face as his eyes fall on the cross.

Dean swallows. "My dad didn't want me wearing it." he says, fingering it. "Didn't even want it to still be here but...."

He scratches his head. "Always made me feel brave when I was little, guess it kinda makes me feel like she's still with me."

"My son wore it," rasps John, trying to get his throat to open as he remembers Dean as a child refusing to go anywhere his necklace couldn't go.

He swallows. "I'm sorry." he whispers. "Didn't mean to bring up things you'd rather forget."

"I don't want to forget it." John walks over and once more seizes him in an embrace.

Dean leans into the hug, wrapping his arms around the older Winchester.

"Thanks dad." he says gruffly.
