Kurt sighed as he gazed out the window. New home, new view. It wasn't that he disliked the castle, but a part of him missed his home world, even if the X Men and mutant haters were there all along.

But he wouldn't give this place up for anything, it meant so much to his Joy, and it was safe for her. All he wanted was a good home for her. His Joy.... He loved her so much when he saw her he could barely speak, but still, because his courage had failed him completely and the heartbreaks of Ororo and Mara had only just started to pass, he was afraid to do anything but take her on picnics, and sometimes made her a fancy dinner, if he could pursuade the kitchen staff to let him help.

He hated his gutlessness, but he didn't want to rush her, or himself. He wanted things with her to work out right.

She lay her head against the back of his shoulder instead, those fathomless black eyes watching them as she drew comfort from the contact. "Ve'll go, but ye maun promise t' nae harm us."

"Ya smell like me. Why?" Logan demanded, growling.

"Wait," said a familiar voice, and Kurt felt his heart near stop as the professor appeared.

The older man looked at the piar for a moment, then shook his head.

"Logan, leave them be," he said, looking at the man, who scowled back but went to stand by Ororo. Then he cleared his throat. "Would you two care to join me for some breakfast?"

"Mein Leibe?" whispered Joy, reaching around him beneath the shelter of her wings to take his hand. "I kin git us through t' vall."

Kurt squeezed her hand back and looked up, glancing at the professor.

"It's alright," he said softly. "Ve are not under threat here. Ve can valk out if ve vish."

"Chuck?" Logan's scowl deepened.

"Kurt is no longer a threat to us or anybody else," the professor turned to Logan. "He gave me his word he would no longer give us reason to lock him away, and he has never once given us reason to doubt his word."

He turned back to the young couple questioningly. Kurt took a deep breath and looked at Joy, asking what she wanted.

"I'll go vith vhat ye vant," she whispered, meeting his eyes and keeping the hold on his hand.

Kurt looked at her for a moment, then kissed her cheek gently before turning to the professor and nodding mutely.

"Wonderful. I think we have a lot to talk about," he said, turning and leaving.

"You have to let me go," he said softly, entwining his fingers with hers. "Come. Novon vill hurt anybody here, my love."

She hesitated, then gave Logan a meaningful look and took her wings from around Kurt, exposing his tunic and pants, and her own halter and skort. Moving up beside Kurt, she gently took away that hand and gave him the other so that they could walk hand in hand.

"What'd he do? Join some kinda cult?" Logan's grumble followed them out the door. Kurt's cheeks lit up as an old spark of fury remembered itself, but he looked at Joy and calmed down.

Meanwhile they had arrived at the dining room, where Jean was just leaving. She stared at the couple for a moment, then politely excused herself.

"Come in," the professor said, wheeling in and taking his place at the head of the table, guesturing to the empty placesettings.

Joy wordlessly took the seat that Kurt pulled out for her, ears flicking to catch every possible sound as she worked out the right way to lay her wings on the floor to either side of her.

Once she was seated Kurt sat beside her, keeping his eyes on his plate.

"So," the professor said, folding his hands and guesturing towards the food-filled plates. "What are you doing back?"

"It vas a mistake," Kurt said softly. "Ve vere trying to go elsevere."

"And who might you be?" the professor asked kindly, looking at Joy.

"Joy 'o Howlett," she said softly. "Kurt's lady."

"Howlett," the professor said, then nodded. "Well, you're most welcome in this home. I do not know what Kurt might have already told you, but he is welcome here. You may have to understand, however, if some old feelings of resentment arise."

Kurt looked away, ashamed, but also unwilling to admit his approach was wrong. He felt bad, however, that his love had to come here and see this.

"Aye, Howlett," she said evenly, folding her hands in her lap. "'N if by 'understand' ye mean accept vitoot comment I cannae promise tae abide by that."

"I merely meant tempers may arise. Kurt did not leave quietly, or with the best wishes following him," he said calmly. "I only ask you not fight anybody during your stay."

"Ve vill not be here long unless mien liebe asks," he said, looking up, his eyes flashing slightly. "Ve had a truce, Xavier. It does not mean I buy into your dream any more zen I did ven I left."

"Understood, of course," the professor sighed.
