There's a newcomer to the Nexus today -- a woman in her very early thirties, with bright red hair and a forest-green sweater, sitting on one of the provided couches and looking at travel brochures. She wandered in earlier, and after the obligatory "?!?/can I get back" moment, has decided that she might as well do as the sign asks and ask a question. She spreads out her brochures on a table in front of her and looks up.

"So, random strangers! I'm a wanderer, and I've wandered almost all of the United States. So I think it's time I broke into international travel. Since it's my first time in this regard, I figured I'd at least start out by going to one of the more well-known cities, and see where adventure leads me from there."

She holds up three brochures.

"The question of the day is, then: London, Paris, or Rome?"

"Really bad," Lucy says, looking at her hands. "I -- my power is to inspire people. You know, like a muse. I snap my fingers or touch somebody, and suddenly they get a brilliant idea of some sort. Problem is, I can't control what they come up with. . .and if I don't use it at least once a day, it starts building up inside of me. When they put me in solitary, I got a massive build-up of energy. So big, in fact, that when they finally let me back out, it all pretty much exploded out of me."

She swallows. "One of the guys I inspired was a recovering pyromaniac."

McCrennin's chin trembles as she remembers fires she's seen and been in and thinks what it must feel like to have caused something like that.

"Someone here might be able to help you with that," she says very quietly. "Control, I mean."

Oh, it was bad. Lucy actually ran away for a few days, terrified of going back to her family in the wake of the disaster. "I'm just glad they were able to get the majority of the people out," she mumbles. "When I think of how bad it COULD have been. . ." Yeah.

"I think I've got it -- I don't let a day go by without giving someone a jolt," she says. "But if somebody's got any tips for me, I'm not going to say no. I'd really prefer to avoid a repeat of that situation."

McCrennin's hand goes to a pocket, and then her face lengthens. "This is a situation requiring English mints. And I don't have any more."

Lucy can't help it -- she laughs. "The offer is appreciated, at any rate."

McCrennin manages that slight smile, but then sighs. "Look, it's not because I'm not interested in your story, but I have to go. If I don't I'll be sleeping here, and if I do that there's not telling what I'll wake up as."

Lucy blinks a few times. "Wait -- this place can just -- change you? Randomly?" Please stay long enough to give her a little advice on that, McCrennin.

"Not the place itself. Okay, maybe it is the place itself... it's sentient." McCrennin puts down her story in her lap and starts digging vigorously through all her pockets, aware of that guy over there watching and waiting his turn to offer Lucy an answer for her question. "Ahah. I knew I had one."

She pulls a crumpled pamphlet out of her pocket and tosses it down. "That's all about LOLs. That's the local term for the changes."

Lucy doesn't notice the guy, too intent on watching McCrennin and her pockets. "Sentient," she repeats softly. "Yeeps, what have I walked into. . ."

"Oh, they give out pamphlets? Wish I'd known that earlier. . ." Lucy picks it up and looks it over. "LOL, huh? Makes you wonder who's laughing."

"The guys at the Black Dog publish them. They have books too." McCrennin pauses after gaining her feet on the big couch. "...I've laughed at a couple."

"I'll have to find the place and pick up a few," Lucy says with a nod, then grins. "And I guess it depends on what the change is, huh? Hopefully I'll only run into the ones worth laughing at."

[southboundflame]

"This was a bunch of guys playing poker. And smacking each loser in the head with an LOL paddle as they lost." McCrennin weebles slightly, then nods to the guy that's watching. "I think Major Walker could probably tell you more. He won that game. But..." A deep breath and an apologetic expression. "If I don't go now I'm not going to. Nice meeting you, Lucy."

"Oh dear," Lucy says with a little giggle. She follows McCrennin's gaze over to the man. "I see. Good for him."

She nods, giving her a smile. "It's all right -- you go get your sleep. It was good meeting you too, McCrennin. Thanks for the info."

McCrennin gives her a slightly zonked wave, and then vanishes with a swish and a slight flash.
