Joy woke slowly, stretching before she opened her eyes and then stopping short as she realized that things didn't sound, feel, or even smell right.

Jerking to a sitting position, she looked around with dismay to find herself in a tiny, comfortably furnished room, tucked into a pile of cushions and sheets on a broad windowseat that overlooked a patch of semi-tropical undergrowth.

The gentle beauty of the place was lost on her as she tossed the bedding aside and leaped toward the door. "Kurt??"

The store was a small place, with everything all in one room and a door in the back that lead to the rest of the house. Over in one corner was a counter with a sign that said 'Post Office'.

Joy looked around the place with a bit of wonder; it was all new to her, and very interesting.

Kurt smiled, then looked around. "Can I find a Miss Hanna here?"

"Right here." A shapely young woman of Hawaiian descent looks around a shelf full of second-hand paperback books. "How can I help you?"

"Erm," Kurt suddenly wondered what he was supposed to say.

"My name ist Kurt Vagner, und zis is Joy Howlette," he said, going over to her and offering a hand. "Ve... er... rather inexplicably voke up in your home zis morning..."

"My home...." She looked toward the back, then blinked. "Oh. You mean the beachhouse?"

"Uh, ja. Ve er, did haff some food und such, but I can repay you," he said quickly.

Her forehead creases. "Everything was paid in advance... you mean your friend just dropped you off without telling you anything?"

"Er," he frowned. "Vait... I think zere has been some mistake... ve don't know anybody from zis vorld."

"This world?" Hanna's face creased.

"This island, he means," interposed Joy quickly, squeezing Kurt's hand. "'N yeah, we jes' got dumped v' nary a varnin'."

Hanna shook her head. "Well, I guess it's better than stuffing you in a freight car. It was a guy named Charlie Summers. Big black guy with blue eyes."

"Och." Joy's eyes twinkled slightly as she nodded. "Alright. I ken who yer speakin' 'o. 'N I'll be gi'in' 'im a piece 'o me mind vhen ve meet agin."
