New Haven: Family

Jay-Jay smiled as she walked out of the resturaunt she waitressed in, folding her apron and looking around, stretching and making her way down the road, spotting her husband in his usual place in the foodcourt. Children hung off him as he dozed, AJ held close and Isha not currently in sight. A sign with a collection pail beneathe it hanging near him read "Kiddie care, $5 an hour".

She smiled fondly, going over and hunkering down next to him, giving him a kiss.

"Hey, babe. Good day?" she asked. He rumbled and looked up at her, eyes twinkling as he slowly rolled over, sending the children climbing on him scattering and laughing as he displayed AJ, who Jay-Jay kissed. "Where's Isha?"

He took it cautiously, sniffed it, then nibbed on one end. His ears perked, and he hunkered down, offering the rest to AJ.

Uzulee chuckled and darted back into the baking room for a pastry for each of the others, then looked at Scott. "Can we see the babies?"

His grin widened. "Sure, go ahead. You know where the stairs are."

"Come on, John," Jay-Jay said gently. He nodded, following. Jay-Jay smiled at Scott as she tried her pastry. "These are absolutely delicious," she said. "Thank you, very much."

"You're welcome." His grin now seemed to suggest some great and wonderful surprise.

"Come on!" called Uzulee from where she stood in the doorway that led to the staircase.

"Oops," Jay-Jay blushed and finished the treat, then went up. In passing John sniffed Scott, then snorted and padded up the stairs after his wife on three limbs, his children held safely in one arm.

Uzulee led the way up the narrow stairs and into the living room above, which was dominated by a massive glass tank sitting on the floor along one wall. Plants grew in the tank, but it was also unmistakably full of swimming things about the size of a doll or tiny baby.

A slender woman with butterfly wings looked around at their entrance and smiled welcome, then returned to her work in the kitchen.

"That's Rita. She doesn't speak verbally," said Uzulee, then quickly ran to wash her hands in the kitchen sink before going to the tank and putting them in the water. "Hi, guys! Did you miss Aunty Uzulee?"

Jay-Jay touched the glass of the tank, her eyes widening.

"Wow... and those are all babies?" she said, looking up.

"All sixteen of them." She moved her hands, trying to give every infant who wanted to say hi a chance. Several were distracted by Jay-Jay's bright fur and were gazing at it curiously through the side of the tank with big blue eyes.

"Wow... who's are they?" she asked softly, touching the glass and smiling at them.

"Scott and Rita's." Uzulee grinned as one tiny boy grabbed her fingers with both his hands and held on.

"They're gonna have one fill house," she said, smiling. "Why are they in the tank?"
