Goliath sighed as he walked through the door and found himself and his alternate in the hospital cafeteria. "I meant to get something to eat, but I'd forgotten."

A young nurse came up behind them and gently poked gargoyle Goliath in the wing. "Excuse me, please. I need coffee NOW."

"I have found impending parenthood can affect the judgment of many a reasonable being," Goliath replied.

"Now, he lacks purpose and the ability to act, something quite contrary to my... his.. our nature, regardless of shape or species."

"I know. 'N he's torn between protectin' Lexington 'n being with Elisa 'n protectin' her 'n the bairn, too. She needs tae be alone, but he needs her with 'im so he's got all the ones he's most driven tae protect together." Hudson shook his head, wondering just where Elisa had gone. It didn't seem like her to be so far from a hurt friend.

Then he dropped his voice even lower. "Did he tell ye how bad it is?"

Goliath shook his head. "He had mentioned that it was severe, and I am familiar enough with this kind of injury to... what is the phrase? Connect the dots?"

He shook it again. "But I am no expert. What have the doctors said?"

The old one hunkered down with his back to the wall and looked away for a moment while he worked up the self control to say it.

"They're not expectin' him tae make it."

Goliath gasped in surprise and almost fell backwards, instead managing to brace himself against the wall.

"No..."

"His heart's already stopped three times. The physicians're talkin' 'bout brain damage." Hudson didn't look at him. "But they're only mortal, they are nae always right."

"Isn't there... anything that can be done?"

"I'm prayin'...." Hudson took a deep breath as his voice broke slightly.

Goliath nodded. "I, too, have often felt that way. How... how are the others taking this?"

"Broadway hasn't said anythin' since 'e got word. As far as I know he's still sittin' in the dinin' room at the castle lookin' stunned. The others're in shock, but they're still doin' their patrols. 'N as fer our landlord...." He nodded aways down the hall where a human figure crouched and leaned against the wall with his head on his hand.

Goliath sighed, and managed to hide his amazement. Though if you forced the issue on him, he would admit that Xanatos had changed, he would have sincerely doubted that he would ever conduct what was practically a bedside vigil. Except...

Alexander. Of course. Of all the Clan, Xanatos's son was most fond of Lexington, and Lexington likewise cared for the infant. It was one of the things that had gone the farthest in bridging the gap between them all.
