Goliath sighed as he walked through the door and found himself and his alternate in the hospital cafeteria. "I meant to get something to eat, but I'd forgotten."

A young nurse came up behind them and gently poked gargoyle Goliath in the wing. "Excuse me, please. I need coffee NOW."

The gargoyle's former foe strode quickly to the bed and seemed to search Lex's face, then turned his head toward the monitors.

"Nothing yet." Lucy sighed.

Xanatos scowled and looked at Lex again rather than answer her, giving his injured friend a low-voiced pep talk before he turned his head to look for Goliath and started as he realized that there was a gargoyle in the room.

"Okay, what the @#$%&$#@#?" Fox frowned at Goliath.

"He's a relative from another clan." Lucy put her ears back warningly.

"I thought I'd met most of the other clans." The former mercenary's frown went a little confused.

"So did we." The mutate shrugged.

"Pretty strong family resemblance."

"You could say he's a twin... it's a long, weird story and I'm really not in the mood to try and figure out how to explain it. "But this is Goliath, too."

Xanatos cocked his head and seemed to study the visitor. "Hello, I'm David Xanatos, a friend of the Manhattan clans."

"I have heard much about you, Xanatos..." Goliath replied. "Rest assured that any ally of the Manhattan clan is also an ally of mine."

The millionaire paused and frowned, but then smiled. "Good."

He started to say more, but Fox forcibly excused him and removed him from the room.

"I don't think he bought it." Lucy stood and stretched, then indicated that Goliath should come back and sit with her in the chairs again.

"He most certainly did not," Goliath replied. "Xanatos is quite possibly the smartest being on the planet. A hastily constructed lie would not fool him in the slightest."

She settled in the big chair and watched over her shoulder as Elisa crept inside and tucked herself under the blanket next to human Goliath, then turned back to the big gargoyle. "Nope, but I bet you didn't see through his."

Goliath sighed and pulled his wife close, wrapping her in the blanket without waking.

"Why does it seem... Oh, what is the phrase? Why does it seem like I am the only one working without a script?"

"Hmm?" She cocked her head.

"I consider myself reasonably intelligent... But I often seem to be the last to be made aware of or to realize things."

"Don't worry, even Fox didn't realize until for a long time." Lucy studied the fur on the back of her hand. "He's blind."

"What?!" Goliath managed to make this a loud whisper, rather than the true roar of surprise he would have liked.

"Got his corneas knocked loose or something taking a Quarryman hit back before they disbanded." She shifted and checked on Lex, then looked toward the two on the floor before glancing up and smiling welcome to Hudson as he returned.

"Will wonders never cease... This universe seems virtually filled to the brim with surprises."

"They'd attacked the castle just before sundown, and that one was aiming at one of the gargoyles." Lucy shook her head and snorted.

Hudson gave her a severe look. "The lad didnae exactly have time tae think."

She just gave him the eyebrow.

"I must confess, I am more apt to agree with Hudson. I would not have expected such self-sacrificing heroics from Xanatos, no matter how much of an ally he may be."
