Goliath sighed as he walked through the door and found himself and his alternate in the hospital cafeteria. "I meant to get something to eat, but I'd forgotten."

A young nurse came up behind them and gently poked gargoyle Goliath in the wing. "Excuse me, please. I need coffee NOW."

Goliath nodded slightly. "I see."

"Maybe twas just time. But some think that knowing that somehow some of us had crossed the barrier 'o race made us more real 'n less monster." He shrugged, personally not putting a lot of weight on that last theory.

"Elisa has often wondered if the revelation of her own story would serve to bring us closer to the humans, or serve only to create fear."

"T'would have a chance 'o either, I suspect. Though she wasnae so well known save tae the force 'n her family. Maria was the mayor's niece."

He squirmed slightly and glanced toward the door again, praying.

"That... would certainly have a more profound impact," Goliath agreed.

"The lass's a born politician... though an oddly honest one."

Goliath made a face. "Politics. I was scarcely able to follow those in the days of kings and queens. Now it has only grown more complicated."

Hudson shook his head in rueful agreement, then leaped to his feet as Lucy appeared suddenly. The look on her face made his heart stop and he reached out to grab her by the shoulders. "What is it? Malibu?"

She swallowed. "We lost him."

The old gargoyle closed his eyes and forgot his discomfort around her to hold her close as she squeezed her eyes shut.

It was not difficult for Goliath to formulate, at least, a guess about what had happened.

"I am sorry."

"That's all the young ones." Hudson's face was creased with dismay as he looked at the alternate of his friend. He had never liked the clones, but seeing them fade into stone as they had was chilling.

"Franklin, Delilah, and Burbank are safe." Lucy's voice was muffled against his chest. "The instability came from the youth of the genetic donors."

"Our own clones have shown no signs of instability," Goliath said. "But this is truly tragic."

Some puzzlement worked its way through his features though. Delilah was a clone of Elisa. This world's Elisa was human. What was going on?

"Aye," muttered Hudson, absently stroking the back of Lucy's head as she cried quietly into the front of his shirt. Then he noticed Goliath's expression and frowned. "What's wrong, lad?"

"You mentioned Delilah. There is a clone in my world by that name, but she is a clone of Elisa."
