Other Gargoyles-verse: Hospital: Checking Up

The ability to travel freely and unmolested in the modern world was a new enough concept to be novel to Goliath.  For Elisa, it was nearly heartbreaking.  She'd lost this world.  She held no reservations about the fact that she'd become a Gargoyle.  Though she had lost much, her relationship with Goliath, the Clan, and the lives she'd help save more than made up for it.

All the same, being able to simply walk through a human hospital and get only the occasional odd glance (some of which was no doubt due to their resemblance to the very human Goliath and Elisa Maza of this world), was a miracle indeed.

"Hope ah, Lex is okay..." Elisa said.

Hudson swiftly cleaned Lucy's wound and wrapped it, then straightened and looked toward Elisa as the baby's cries continued. "What's wrong?"

"Dunno... guess she didn't like the noise?"

He hesitated as though pulled two ways, but then walked over and held out his arms. "Kin I see her?"

Lucy, still sitting on the counter, watched silently.

Elisa hesitated for just a second, but handed the girl over to Hudson.

He rocked her gently, murmuring soothingly in his Gaelic accent, then walked over and got a sheet from the pile of clean laundry sitting in the basket and wrapped her up tight like a little mummy.

The cries stopped almost instantly and were replaced by contented baby breathing.

Lucy stared, then looked down, shoulders slumping.

"Well," Elisa said. "That worked..."

"Some bairns jus' like bein' snug." He stared down at the tiny face with wonder, then looked around toward Lucy with a big grin that faded to concern as he saw how she was sitting.

Elisa frowned, uncertain of what to do. Should she stay...? Or go and let these two work things out on their own?

He looked at her as though asking what to do, his good eye uncharacteristically uncertain and even a little afraid.

C'mon Elisa, think. ... Think harder.

"Er... kid's gonna need a name, isn't she?"

He blinked and looked confused, then started slightly and turned toward Lucy as she spoke.

"I was thinking of Jane," said the small mutate quietly. "It means a gift."

"And it goes with yer own name." Hudson nodded and looked again at his daughter. "I like it."

Lucy looked over at them. "We need to talk."

"Aye." He pressed his lips together and nodded.

Elisa smiled slightly, the smile of one who knows her work is done. "I'll just... be going," she said, softly.

Both the new parents gave her a slightly panicked look, but then nodded and squared their shoulders.

"I'll be seein' ye," said Hudson softly, as Lucy said, "See you, Elisa."

"We'll drop by again, don't you worry," Elisa says, as she heads out the door. Time to head back and collect Goliath. She had a sudden urge to spend some time with the egg back home.
