Other Gargoyles-verse: Hospital: Checking Up

The ability to travel freely and unmolested in the modern world was a new enough concept to be novel to Goliath.  For Elisa, it was nearly heartbreaking.  She'd lost this world.  She held no reservations about the fact that she'd become a Gargoyle.  Though she had lost much, her relationship with Goliath, the Clan, and the lives she'd help save more than made up for it.

All the same, being able to simply walk through a human hospital and get only the occasional odd glance (some of which was no doubt due to their resemblance to the very human Goliath and Elisa Maza of this world), was a miracle indeed.

"Hope ah, Lex is okay..." Elisa said.

"EEEEEEEEEE, no!" A little girl fleeing her mother ducked around behind Elisa and clung to her leg. "No nono! Can't make me go!"

Well, this is a new experience... Elisa thought, momentarily startled. She gave Goliath a look which said 'Don't you dare laugh,' though considering he was already fighting the urge to chuckle, this was obviously an ineffective effort.

She smiled gently for the child. "Hey there, kiddo. It can't be that bad, can it?"

"Yeah, that's what Father keeps saying, and Hudson." He tried to smile, then offered a hand. "I'll take you to him. He's in a different room now... oh, you know that, because you're on this floor."

His expression showed frustration with himself and the suspicion that he was sounding pretty dumb.

"The people downstairs were nice enough to explain," Elisa says, trying to sound reassuring. "But you'll still have to show us the way. I don't really know my way around."

-And Mom and Dad at my place waiting to visit, so I can't even stay.- Elisa scowled absently and rubbed the spot that the baby had kicked at. "Hey... I'd forgotten how good I looked with wings."

The other side of the coin. A human Elisa with a human Goliath to play multiversal counterpoint to the Gargoyle Elisa and her Gargoyle Goliath. Life was strange sometimes.

"She has always been beautiful to me," Goliath said.

Elisa smiled. And I'd forgotten how good I looked with eyebrows."

Elisa chuckled too, then grunted and and gave her belly the hairy eyeball before tugging on Franklin's wing and leading him out of the room.

"Are ye worn oot from yer eloquence yet, lad?" Hudson grinned at Lex.

Elisa and Goliath both returned their attention to Lex, smiles on both of their faces. "First time I've ever seen him speechless," she chuckled.

"Grab her." Emily struggled not to drop the tiny girl as she bucked excitedly toward Goliath's hands. "Quick!"

Goliath took the baby from her, holding her with a care and tenderness that seemed slightly at odds with his size. "Hello there, little one," he said. "Do you have a name?"

"Yes." Delilah smiled, then looked down at her jacket with concern.

"Och." Hudson started forward. "Have ye the babes?"

"Yes. Maggie asked me to take care of them." She frowned and unzipped the coat, then took out two little balls of fur with big blue eyes. "I don't know why they're unhappy. She fed them before she gave them to me... and their diapers are clean."

"Babies!" cheered Lex softly.

Elisa blinked at yet another surprise.

"Oh, God... they're adorable!" It takes her a moment before she can speak again and when she does, she shakes her head. "Derek and Maggie have both said that they weren't going to try for kids... because they'd be Mutates..."

He wriggled and blinked, then gave a tiny giggle.

Chelsea just sighed and snuggled.

"So," said Emily, holding in a laugh. "Are you guys here to see Lex? Or play with the babies?"

Elisa smiled. "We came to check up on Lex. The babies are just a bonus."

He started and looked up. "How did this come about?"

"Same place everything else strange and messed-up comes from," Elisa said. "Servarius. Tried growing his own Gargoyle egg, accelerated to near hatching, using DNA taken from me and the Big Guy here."

Silence fell as the bag sank into itself further. Moments passed.

And then it moved, and a muffled infant wail broke the silence.

Lucy and Hudson both responded instinctively, untying the bag and pulling away a wrapping of blankets. Both of their hands touched the baby inside at the same time, and they both stopped and stared as they uncovered a newborn infant that distinctly resembled both of them.

"Jalapeña," muttered Goliath.

"That's... a new one," Elisa managed, after a moment.

"Thanks." Lucy smiled.

And was gone.

Goliath growled to himself, then started as his radio crackled.

"Maza!" said an irate voice. "That's a really long coffee run!"

"Oh!" He looked at the clock. "Yes, chief. Something happened. I'll be right back."

"Go ahead, Goliath," Elisa said. "I think things've settled down here."

"Aye." His voice cracked slightly.

"You... gonna be okay?"

"I'm in the equivalent 'o me sixties. She's thirty in five days." He shook his head.

She frowned. "That's not... Okay, it is a pretty big difference. But humans do it all the time."

He'd reached out to steady her, eye widened in concern. But at her question he drew back and rubbed his face. "Och. I dinnae ken! If I were younger I wouldnae hesitate, race be @#$%&$#@."

Elisa blinked in surprise. She'd never heard that kind of language out of her Hudson before.

Still, breakthrough!

"You've still got a lot of years in you, Hudson."

Emily, Chelsea, the fuzzies and Delilah were gone when they reached the room. There was also no sign of Lucy or the new baby.

Hudson looked around, then nodded to garg-Goliath and walked over to Lex's bed.

"He is doing well," Goliath reported.

"Och." He looked at him. "Goliath said he'd a family there."

"Yeah. Kat's really good for him."

"Is there any chance you could bring it over? I don't think I should take the baby out in this rain."

"Hmm? Sure thing," she said. "Where's you at?"

"Alright." She lifted her eyebrows, then turned and hurried over to the couch as the baby started to cry.

"How's... how's she doing?"

Lucy's steps paused for a moment, but then continued. "He's not that old, for a gargoyle. And it wouldn't matter if he was."

Her voice held both love and exasperation.

"Hey, it's just what he said. I tried to convince him otherwise, but he's as stubborn as a mule."

The crying continued for a few minutes, but then faded to sobby little hiccups as the tiny girl snuggled and fell asleep.

Lucy raised her eyebrows. "Well, I guess that's an argument in favor of her being with Hudson."

"She'd do better with both of you," Elisa said, before she could stop herself.

Hudson swiftly cleaned Lucy's wound and wrapped it, then straightened and looked toward Elisa as the baby's cries continued. "What's wrong?"

"Dunno... guess she didn't like the noise?"
