Patchverse: Night trips

Jubee giggled and Arnold explored her shoulder, nose twitching as he moved. Jubee herself had a large cardboard box of parts she'd found in a dump, playing with the tools she'd bought to try making things without her own hardware. The mess sat on newspapers and stretched over a good five-foot square area of her bedroom floor, beyond which the room was its usual pristine self.

So far she'd managed to make a small assortment of action heros, all standing almost a foot high and made out of various gadgets and parts, some with bent metal plating. She beamed and looked at Pikachu, who had his own small wire-made Arnold Jr. sitting on top of his head.

She looked up, sensing it was getting late. She smiled and wondered if Wolvie wanted her to go with him again to the basement bar they'd been visiting the past four nights.

"Ye've ben here before?" He looked down at her, feeling a little disappointed.

"In a couple other universes. But I've lost my way and can't find them anymore. It's the coolest place ever," she beamed, then leaned up and kissed his cheek. "I didn't think there were any left, this is so cool Wolvie! Almost as neat as my room!"

He grinned, then blinked as the waitress set a mug of something beer coloured in front of him and sniffed at it. "Oh, fake beer. Gator's tryin' ta make me puke."

"Dare ya to drink it," she giggled, looking at it.

He snorted and chugged it, then set the mug down and looked surprised.

"Grandfather?" asked Kurt.

"It's good."

"Sweet," she laughed, then made herself a glass of juice to drink from so she didn't look out of place.

"Fergit the coffee, give us a jug'a that," he told the waitress gruffly, then gave Matt a boot to the shin when the young lawyer laughed at him.

Jubilee giggled and watched, recognizing alternate faces and missing some old friends as she did.

The ones that she recognized would all be older in some way. Even Gator's scales were a little darker where he held court over the bar, and that dark-haired young man leaning against it was the fat little baby who'd once broken out of an egg. Across the seating area a matronly but still sleek Fox was giving her second husband a hard time as three young men of Asian ancestry pestered a grey-skinned girl with bright blue eyes.

She sighed and looked at her drink. She felt old and silly at such times. Here she was, over forty, and she was still a small, child-like asian girl who had to pretend to eat and drink to fit in.

"What's wrong, darlin'?" Logan put an arm around her and looked down, alerted by the familiar brooding Jubee expression.

"I'm never gonna get big," she said softly, leaning into him. "And I'll never feel big, either."
