World Outside Time: Four days later: Wedding

Firecracker watched as Sir James and Anmut exchanged rings, her fingers twitching with the urge to pet the hunter green velvet tunic that Sir James wore with black pants and a brown cloak with red satin lining. Next to him, Anmut wore a long strip of white satin wrapped around her body to make something that wasn't quite a dress but looked something like one with sideslits.

The funny coat and collar bowed, then clapped invisable hands together and turned to a page in the big Book which Sir James and Anmut wrote in. Firecracker's mama wrote in it next, and then everyone turned to her.

"Yer turn, lass," rumbled Sir James, smiling.

Firecracker blinked in alarm. "But I can't write."

Jubee felt tears well up in her eyes, and she bowed her head, struggling for compuser. This was a wedding night, supposed to be happy. And she couldn't leave, not when she had so little time anyway.

"I'm good," she said softly, then found herself picked up ang hugged before Logan looked at her and frowned.

"What's wrong?" he asked.

"We gotta go tomorrow morning," she said softly. "Charlie said so."

Sir James nodded and looked up at his wife and new daughter. Then he reached for his tankard of ale. "Well, we'd best make the most 'o the time we have then, lass. No use cryin'."

"I'm sorry," she said softly, looking down.

"Ain't yer fault," Logan said softly, hugging her. "Cheer up kid, it's a weddin' night."

"Yeah," she sniffed. "I'm sorry."

Sir James let go Anmut's hand and came over, reaching for Jubilee. "C'mere, Joy."

Logan let her down and she went to him, trying to smile.

"I'm happy for you, really. I just... I wish I didn't have to go tomorrow. I don't wanna," she said, hugging him as tightly as her ribs would allow.

"I know," he rumbled softly, stroking her hair. "And I'd keep ye in a heartbeat, lass. Ye know that."

"It's not fair. Why can't there be an open portal here or something? I wanna see you guys again," she said, clinging to him.

He kissed her forehead and rocked gently on the balls of his feet. "I know, lass. I know."

"I'm sorry," she hiccuped again and sighed. "Really. Let's get back to your wedding party, that was more fun."

He gave her another kiss on the forehead, then glanced at Logan with a challange in his eyes and handed her his tankard of ale.
