She stood there, invisable in the broad light of day, and watched Sam, her turquoise eyes intent and a little sad. Behind her on the ground lay the remains of the thing that had tried sneaking up on him unawares, but she had no interest in her kill. Things like that weren't food. You only killed them to keep the world from stinking and to protect your own.

Sam was just standing there. His thoughts were closed, so she couldn't talk to him, but she was content to just watch over him for now.

He leans back in the seat, quashing bitter thoughts at the people who'd done the rebuilding. "Oh."

-Sam?- asks Zanoah softly, trying to understand with all the closed minds.

"What do we have in the way of disguise?" asks John without moving.

Because we have to go back to the house where I was born. Where my mom was killed.

"Do you know who it might be who lives there?" He opens his eyes and looks at Sam, praying inwardly for strength.

"No. Don't really care who does either."
