She stood there, invisable in the broad light of day, and watched Sam, her turquoise eyes intent and a little sad. Behind her on the ground lay the remains of the thing that had tried sneaking up on him unawares, but she had no interest in her kill. Things like that weren't food. You only killed them to keep the world from stinking and to protect your own.

Sam was just standing there. His thoughts were closed, so she couldn't talk to him, but she was content to just watch over him for now.

"Did he used to hide from you and then tickle you?"

"Sometimes. But Dean got a bit too serious at times too. Especially since he was playing big brother and protector."

John's smile fades in the flood of guilt and he looks down at his plate.

"Dad, don't." Sam states simply. "Just don't."

"There's a lot I wish I could change." He looks up with apology in the dark eyes that Sam had inherited.

"But you can't so you need to stop wishing for something that can't be changed."

John nods, then looks at the empty space beside Sam as something wet swipes across the boy's hand that lay on the table.

"I love my kids," he says softly, meaning not just the ones who'd been born to he himself but also the others he'd found since he came to the Cafe.

"There's only a few of 'em that I've found I've taken to." But one of them was dying. He scowls before seeing the waitress again and he knew, just knew she'd ask about Dean.

"I thought I'd recognized you." She smiles and drops into the booth across the aisle from them. "How's that brother of yours?

Sam gives her a forced smile. "He's..." He frowns a bit. Oh, to hell with it. "He's not with us anymore."
