She stood there, invisable in the broad light of day, and watched Sam, her turquoise eyes intent and a little sad. Behind her on the ground lay the remains of the thing that had tried sneaking up on him unawares, but she had no interest in her kill. Things like that weren't food. You only killed them to keep the world from stinking and to protect your own.

Sam was just standing there. His thoughts were closed, so she couldn't talk to him, but she was content to just watch over him for now.

She says something hurried and embarrassed, then excuses herself and walks back toward the kitchen.

John watches her go, then looks at Sam.

"I'm fine, dad." He states simply.

He nods and looks under the table. "Stop that."

Zanoah ignores him and coninues wagging her tail, even though it's thumping him in the shins.

"We should head to the house soon."

John nods and drains his coffee, then glances around and drops the rest of his steak under the table before getting up and going to the counter to pay.

Sam shakes his head and gives a slight chuckle before tearing a good part of his steak that he knows he hadn't eaten and rather than drop it on the floor reaches down and hands it to Zanoah.
