She stood there, invisable in the broad light of day, and watched Sam, her turquoise eyes intent and a little sad. Behind her on the ground lay the remains of the thing that had tried sneaking up on him unawares, but she had no interest in her kill. Things like that weren't food. You only killed them to keep the world from stinking and to protect your own.

Sam was just standing there. His thoughts were closed, so she couldn't talk to him, but she was content to just watch over him for now.

"Yes." His voice is rough as he looks at familiar images that seem to come from a dream.

"We should just... take the boxes and go. I don't want to be in this house longer than I have to."

John nods wordless agreement, scooping two boxes into his arms and heading for the stairs.

Sam grabs the others and takes them out to the car. Once he's sure that they've got everything he just gets in the driver's seat and leans back into it.

John's hands are shaking as he too leans back with his face turned toward the door.

Zanoah watches from a distance, cloaked in invisibility and sending sympathy that she doesn't think is getting past the walls of sadness she's seeing.
