Sign Nexus. Sign Area. I Roam Around Around Around

There's a newcomer to the Nexus today -- a woman in her very early thirties, with bright red hair and a forest-green sweater, sitting on one of the provided couches and looking at travel brochures. She wandered in earlier, and after the obligatory "?!?/can I get back" moment, has decided that she might as well do as the sign asks and ask a question. She spreads out her brochures on a table in front of her and looks up.

"So, random strangers! I'm a wanderer, and I've wandered almost all of the United States. So I think it's time I broke into international travel. Since it's my first time in this regard, I figured I'd at least start out by going to one of the more well-known cities, and see where adventure leads me from there."

She holds up three brochures.

"The question of the day is, then: London, Paris, or Rome?"

The woman on the couch sits up slowly, showing herself to be a sturdy blonde in a battered brown leather jacket.

"Well," she says, pushing her bobbed hair out of her eyes. "If you want to stay on a mainland, and you want a big city, I'd recommend somewhere in India, or China. All kinds of things to see and eat."

"Hmmmm -- sounds interesting," Lucy says, intrigued. "And it would definitely give me more of a story than the typical European trip. I'll have to do some research."

The blonde smiles faintly and rubs her eyes, then looks over toward a sound by the sign, exposing the fact that the back of her jaw and her ear on one side are black with bruising.

Satisfied that the sound isn't really interesting, she turns back to the woman on the smaller couch. "Of course my favourite place to explore is Edmonton's River Valley park. It may not be exciting, and the city isn't very big as cities go, but they're beautiful and quiet, and they've got some interesting history."

Lucy would look to see what was going on too, if she hadn't seen the bruising. She can't help sucking in a breath through her teeth as she sees it. Ouch.

"Canada, huh?" she nods, leaning on the back of her couch. "I'm up for interesting history. Though I'm always most interested in if there's any theater scene." She grins. "Actress."

"Ahhh." The blonde nods carefully. "Edmonton actually brags about its theater scene. And in the summer they have a Street Performer's Festival. My housepet's nephew works at the Citadel theater downtown."

Then she realizes what she just said and facepalms. "I mean my best friend's nephew." Soft grumbling follows.

"Oooooh," Lucy says, immediately interested. "I've still got some saving to do before I start gallivanting around the world. Maybe I'll head up there and check things out while I work on a plan of action."

She'll be holding back her laughter for your sake, McCrennin. Although it's a bit hard. She nods. "Right."

The blonde sighs. "I had some friends at a place where I used to sell my pictures and stories, this couple of guys that were funny and pretty good company. They adopted some dog from the shelter and started constantly trying to convince me that I needed to do the same thing because they said having 'somebody at home' was good for my health. I'm never at the house, and I don't have time for animals." A slight scowl. "And I don't even like dogs, especially not the little things that screech all the time."

She shrugs. "Anyway, they'd started me thinking on the subject of having someone at home, so I put an ad in the paper for a room for a quiet older man." A slight grin. "This retired English butler answered the call, and he's been my best friend ever since." The smile fades back to the scowl.

Lucy nods, grinning at the story. "There are worse ways to find a best friend. Or a roommate." Or a housepet, though she won't say that out loud. She doesn't think she knows the woman well enough to risk it. "I like animals, but having a pet isn't really a good fit with my lifestyle. I tend to wander around a lot." She picks at her sweater. "Has never stopped me from buying plants, though. Easier to care for than a dog or cat, anyway."

"Yeah. I'm at the house maybe two times a year, not counting quick shower and nap stops with the PINpoint. John's got some plants that his sister gave him, and I strongly suspect there's a canary that gets hidden in his room when I'm home. Something was whistling Vivaldi the other day, and it sure didn't sound like him."

She shakes her head, and then winces and puts a hand to the bruises, her expression saying that she is now feeling what everyone who forgets about a deep and stiff bruise feels.

"With me it's more that I keep changing houses -- I'll live one place for a while, then another," Lucy says. "I've got a case of wanderlust that won't quit for anything." She giggles. "Well, on the list of secret pets, a canary is on the low end of the bad scale."

She grimaces, leaning a little closer. "Are you all right? I saw the--" She waves her hand in the general area on her own head.

"Yeah. I don't mind a little bird like that to help him sing as he works on the house." The blonde tips her head back slightly at Lucy's last question, but then nods.

"Yeah," she says again, quietly. "I just got hit with a rock as I was getting a girl out of the way. I'll heal."

"Ouch," Lucy says, wincing. "Big rock, by the looks of it. I don't think I've seen a bruise that bad since -- well, since some guy tried to mug me and I showed him I know karate."

"They don't use small ones when they stone people." One corner of the blonde's mouth, the one further from the bruise, turns up slightly as she reaches to pick up some papers that decided to slide when she moved on the couch cushion.

"Stone -- do I want to know?" Lucy asks, biting her lip nervously. "I thought that sort of thing went out of vogue long before lightbulbs were invented."

"It happens all the time in some countries." The blonde gathers up several of the papers, then folds them in half and tosses them down. "Right along with female circumcision and breast mutilation."

. . .Please excuse Lucy as she crosses her arms tightly against her chest. "Okay -- wow. That's -- that's pretty messed up," she says. "Just -- wow."

"It's totally messed up." The blonde points to the papers that she tossed over. "Those are of the stoning. I pulled a Spider Man and stuck my camera to a roof top nearby."

Lucy's not sure she wants to look, but does anyway. "Yiii. . . So I'm guessing you're a reporter?" she adds. Makes sense with the Spider-Man reference.

The printed out pictures show a darkly veiled figure, which looks very small compared to the men who are surrounding her, begging for mercy with uplifted hands before being crushed to earth by a rock, then a taller figure veiled in grey appearing beside her before both vanish.

"Freelance photojournalist," says the blonde. "And she's going to be alright, though she'll never be able to go back to that reality again."

It's all pretty dark and disturbing stuff. Lucy shivers a little as she looks at it. Poor girl. . .

She nods, then arches an eyebrow. "I'm glad she's going to be all right, but -- reality?" This just took an interesting turn.

The blonde groans softly. "You mean you didn't realize this isn't Earth?"

"I'm new here," is the only defense Lucy can offer. "I guessed this place was 'off the beaten track,' as you might put it, but I'm still getting used to how it works. And you seemed just like me, so I assumed. . ." She shrugs.

"Look up," says the blonde gently, knowing that the whales are up there in the sky right now.

Lucy does so.

And stares for a good minute. "Ooookay then," she says finally, eyes still fixed on the sky. "That's new and different."

"And if you look carefully at the sign, you'll notice the green Andalite sitting on it."
