Dark Angelverse: On the Hunt

Laka blinked as she and her father suddenly appeared in the busy streets of Washington. Laka blinked, then tugged at her strange, Earth-like clothes. She'd chosen baggy leggings and a short sleeved shirt that almost reached her knees, which were ideal for hiding her blaster and vibroblade. On her wrist she wore a sheild, but it had cloth wrapped over it.

Dressed in jeans and a trenchcoat her father stood by her side, looking out through her visors and frowning. He didn't like it, being alone with Laka in a strange enviornment with only an escape through a nexus portal to rely on. And he didn't even know where to look for the boy who's brother had been mindwiped into forgetting him. He sighed, then looked around. They'd just asked to be sent to Earnest, but he was nowhere in sight.

"Stay on your guard," he muttered to Laka, who nodded once, sharp eyes glancing through the crowds.

"HEY!" yelled a voice not too far away. "@#$%&$#@! Yeah, I'm talkin' to you! Where the @#$%&$# do you get off talkin' to her like that?!?"

"Earnest, don't! They're bigger than you!" cried a girl's voice.

"Yeah?? Well I'm crazier!!! You wanna piece'a me you @#$%&$#?!?"

Laka blinked, then bolted for the voice and skid to a halt, staring at the scene through dark, intense eyes, lips drawn back in a growl at the confrontation.

Earnest stood toe to toe with a massive man who bulged with cybertronic implants, a frightened eleven year old girl trying to pull him away as six or seven more big guys and as many or more tough women surrounded them.

"You're nothing but a @#$%&$# @#$&$ @#$%&#@," he snarled, pushing up his sleeves.

"Yeah?" snerked the cyborg. "Well you're dead."

The little girl screamed as he aimed a sledgehammer blow at Earnest's stomach.

Only Earnest wasn't there. Shoving the girl... and his jacket... aside, he'd danced away and was now laughing his butt off, green eyes glinting with madness. "Is that all you got?"

He gently shooed her hand away and pressed himself to the wall so that they could pass him, his eyes going back the way they'd come as a warning light on the wall flickered.

"C'mon," Canderous grunted, herding the girls down the passage way. Laka looked angry, but went.

It lead to a drippy concrete room lit by a bare bulb that hung from the ceiling. The little girl walked over and wearily flopped down on an old milk crate, hugging Earnest's jacket close.

Moments passed, then Earnest came zipping into the room, grabbed Laka, and went for a kiss.

"I don't even know when I'm supposed to take my meds." Earnest had just faced a gang of people bigger and meaner looking than him and laughed about it, but now, deprived of his brother, he was trembling and lost.

"We'll figure it out, kid," Canderous said firmly. Laka blinked and frowned, then touched her cheek before leaning up and kissing him chastely, then hugged him and smiled to herself.

Earnest nuzzled his face against hers and stood there for a moment praying and trying to get his thoughts to straighten out.

"We have to get Annie home."

"Hmm?" The little girl looked up from trying on his jacket. "I can take it from here. I know the way."

Earnest took the jacket as Annie gave it to him, then watched as she and the old man climbed out of sight before sighing and hiding his face on Laka's hair.

"Ok?" she said softly, touching his cheek.

"Scared," he admitted.

The walk was fairly long, and went through strange ways, but finally ended at the carefully hidden, reinforced door of a bunker.

And Earnest started searching for the key in his pocket.

Laka grinned and handed the pilfered key to him.

"Laka," Canderous growled softly.

Earnest blinked. "I just remembered that Frank's got the key, because I lost mine... you took it."

"Don't know what to do," he whispered, looking at her with pained eyes. "I don't know what to do. He's... he's not coming back."

"Your brother will be put right, I promie," Canderous said gruffly. "Keep your head, kid."

Laka smiled at him, then set her lips to his for a moment before nuzzling his neck, purring again.

"No." He held Laka close and hid his face in her hair. "He's not coming back."

"I don't know," he said helplessly. "I never paid attention."

She looked them over. "You take them today?"

"I don't remember." He hung his head with embarrassment.

"So I had some this morning... and have more tonight." He lifted his head and looked around, then straightened and reached for Laka's hand as he turned toward the biggest pile of pillows and blankets.

She smiled and took it, then went with him to the pillows and snuggled against him.

"Always in the morning, always in the night," she said, closing her eyes.

Earnest smirked again and tightened his grip on Laka, then fished in the pocket of his jeans and offered her a rather battered golden ring.

Canderous sat up straight. "Hold on there," he growled. Laka ignored him, grinned at the ring, and slid it on before turning and kissing him.
