Kurt slowly rocked his daughter. Eyes closed he sang a soft German lullaby to her, tears splashing down his cheeks again as he waited by his wife's bedside. She wasn't awake yet.

He rocked his child, his beautiful baby girl. She was a treasure in his arms, and every time he looked at her he became more resolved. He was going to get her away from this planet, as soon as possible. Once Joy woke up he'd take them back to the castle, to their world, and he'd keep them there. Safe.

He sighed. If only she'd wake up....

Joy's ears moved in a slight frown, her eyes creasing at the corners without opening.

Kurt blinked. Instinct nagged at him, and he looked over. Joy's eyes....

He sat up with a small gasp, then was at her side in a flash.

"Liebe," he murmured.

She sucked in her breath at the sound of his voice, and her eyelids started to move as she tried to remember how to open them.

She perked her ears, not understanding.

Her mouth worked a little as she tried to get her voice to work, and finally a single word came out, questioning and soft.

"Liebe?"

"Vat I did... it was desperation. Var vas never... it wasn't my first solution. Und I never, ever meant for it to hurt you," he said softly, wiping away his tears. "All I vant... all I've ever vanted... is to take you to a safe vorld, far away from all of zis... raise a family... I love you, Joy, you are my sun und moon und stars und sun. I vould never hurt you, und I vould move mountains to prove my love und devotion, und earn your forgiveness for vat I haff done."

"I... dinnae... remember," she said softly, wishing that he would let the bed down and come lay beside her to chase the chill away from her.

Several weeks later

Joy watched as Juwel nursed, her ears twitching in a smile as she thought of how Kurt had insisted on the name for their baby. She had wanted to name her in honor of her father, but he'd refused.

"Juwel," she said softly, stroking the soft black hair that lay over her daughter's forehead. "Jewel. Aye, fits, it does."

Beside her Sunshine chuckled and rustled her wings softly, and she looked up at the other Feen woman with an ear twitch.

Kurt entered, bearing a tray of the foods his wife liked most for the pair, smiling when he saw them. "Mien liebes," he grinned.

Joy twitched her ears in an answering smile, her dark eyes lighting at sight of him. Then she glanced toward the door as Sunshine slipped from the room.

"Och, I could eat a bee svarm." She gently took Juwel from the breast and made sure her warm wrapping was secure before offering her to her father.

She stopped his words with a kiss. "Mayhap tis better I dinnae remember, Liebe."

He blinked, then looked at her.

"It vill never happen again," he swore softly. "Mein liebe, you are my world. Und as soon as you und ze baby are ready I vant to bring you back to the castle. We'll stay zere... safe. It's all I vant, to know zat mien daughter vill never be hurt und mien liebe will never feel pain again...."

"Pain's a part 'o life, Kurti." She gently stroked the silky fur on his cheek, her eyes on his as her heart ached with sympathy and love for him.

"Is she here?" She lifted her head slightly so that she could look up at him, her arms reaching to cradle Juwel as the tiny girl fussed at her drawing away from Kurt.

"Ja. Probably upstairs at lunch," he said thoughtfully.

"Vill ye git 'er?"

Joy earsmiled up at her. "Vould ye like tae hold Juwel?"

"Oh! I- I'd be honored!" she said, eyes wide with durprise and delight.

The winged woman lowered her wing and gently held out the precious bundle, who sighed and wriggled slightly without waking. "Hold 'er near. She needs t' varmth."

"Ahh... how d'ye feel about crawlers?" She nodded toward the whole shrimp that were still in her bowl, remembering how a good many people weren't comfortable with watching her eat her preferred meals.

"I think they make a fine delicacy," she smiled.

Joy's ears twitched as she took the arm that was around Kurt and used it to pick up another shrimp. "But not fer yersel'."

"Z' Lord's healer?" She stared at him, prawn halfway to her mouth.

"Ja. Nobody thought ze fighting vould stop. But zen you came, alvays working from ze shadows, breaking ground nobody else could," he said, shrugging.

She poked him gently in the ribs, then turned on her side and covered him with her other wing, Juwel tucked safely between them as she sighed contentedly.

He smiled and chuckled, then put his arms around both of his girls and sighed contently. "Good night, liebe, good night, angel," he murmured.
