In a new place.... again.

Kurt woke slowly, his head hurting and telling him about his restless night. He turned slightly in his book, and turned, looking up and seeing a large canopy above him. He blinked and looked up, to his surprise seeing a few globes of light hovering above him.

He sat up, finding himself fully clothed, and turned, pushing the curtains aside slightly, only to see Joy, curled up, asleep on the windowsill that only belonged in castles.

He slowly got up and eased off the bed, then went over, picking her up, careful of her wings, doing his best not to wake her as he lifted her and brought her over to the bed, putting her down on it and making her comfortable before he looked around, wondering where they were now.

Joy blinked and turned her head, then stretched hugely and sighed. "Kurt?"

"Shh, liebe, it is alright," he said, gently. "Eh... do you know vere ve are?"

"Ah." She twitched her ears. "She let me hold her baby. It vas the first time I'd seen vone up close."

He smiled, tentively touching her hand, then looked down. "Is... is she doing vell?"

Her ears twitched slightly as her eyes creased at the corners. "I didn't lose them, leib. I know vere they are."

"I meant.... until you make ze Journey... you vill not see zem again," he said softly.

Joy washed quickly, then came out of her bathroom to find one of her favorite outfits set out on the bed for her. She twitched her ears at the footstool that bounced around her feet, then donned the modest sky blue halter top and the brown suede shorts before stretching luxuriously and brushing her hair to lay free around her shoulders. This done, she went back to wait by Kurt's door till he was ready.

Kurt came out soon in a simple light blue tunic and leggings, and awkwardly bowed her her and offered his hand.

"I am sorry to keep you vaiting..." he said softly.

"Ja." She laughed and led him down the little side corridor, then through the arched doorway and into the cheerfully bustling kitchen, where the apron gave her a glad hug and the stove clattered joyfully.

He looked around, then chuckled.

"Zis must haff been quite ze place to grow up," he said.

She chuckled and led the way to the courtyard. "The kitchen also doesn't realize that most people ain't as strong as me 'n my family."

"Strong? Pfft, zis veighs nuzzing," Kurt shrugged and shook his head.

She rose aloft, then made another pass, and suddenly the castle was falling away beneath Kurt as her arms held him close.

"Voah," he exclaimed, eyes going wide. His hands covered her before he was given a moment to relax, and smile slightly.

"Vow, you are much faster zen it seems looking up," he said, looking at her.

She twitched her ears back at him, then flew over to the massive floating tree and set him gently on the broad trunk before turning and flying back for their lunch.

He smiled as he watchedher go and return, then sighed happily.

"Zank you," he said softly, sitting by her and opening the basket.

She carefully heaped her plate with some of those shrimp and several boiled crayfish from another bowl, then sat back and twitched her ears at him.

He took his own fill of the foor, then looked at her.

"So... how old are you?" he asked, interested. "Vill you live as long as your parents?"

"Ach." She looked a little embarrassed. "I'll have a bite, but no more."

"Nien. I vill enjoy ze pie ven you enjoy ze pie," he said resolutely, flashing her a heartbreaker grin.

She gave her odd ear-smile, then turned her attention to the laden picnic basket, which also contained cheese of a couple different kinds and crackers for Kurt to put it on after Joy had melted it over a handful of her fire.

"Vow," he said, watching. "Beautiful...."

"Ja." She twitched her ears and started putting everything back into the basket.

"Hey! Zat is my job," he chuckled, stopping hre and finishing himself before he stood and offered his hand.

She chuckled as they reached the the fort-like clump of interlinked tree trunks and roots and freed a hand to catch hold of it. "Ye must have a hollow leg, Leib."

He laughed and shrugged.

She turned shining dark eyes toward him, then reached up and picked a little hard blue fruit on a long stem and poked it at his mouth. "Vant a lolipop?"

He giggled and accepted it. "Sure, liebe," he chuckled.

"Of vhat?" Her ears followed the massive insect.

"Bee," he giggled.

She twitched her ears gently, listening to the little animal's curious rumbling, then closed her eyes in wonder and hid her face against Kurt's neck as the hooves came closer and a tiny muzzle touched first her leg and then his.

"Ach...." she whispered.

"Are you alright?" he looked at her worriedly, wondering if she was afraid of the little creature that he slowly reached down to pet.

After awhile Joy had had her fill. She glanced around, then stretched out her wings and wriggled through a small opening in the interlaced trunks and roots, then moved carefully through the cramped corridor on the other side.

Kurt followed her, then looked around. "Vhere are ve going?" he asked.

"Not in the vorlds outside," she said softly, remembering the place they'd come from; the hiding and lurking and eating of bugs.

He sighed and put his arm around her, holding her close. "Zat... zat is true.But I vill not let it hurt you anymore. If... if you vant... my home is open to you, und while it is not much... you vill alvays have someplace to call your own.... alvays... somebody."

"Long ago," she said softly. "Before my moeder's people vere the Seevölker, they called themselves the Woestijn Feen."

"Ja?" Kurt asked, interested. "Vat vere zey like?"

She frowned uncertainly, her hand creeping unconciously toward his.

He took it and kissed it once more, looking at her.

"Please...vatever I meant zose ozzer times... I zink it vas desperation. But know now, fraulin... know.... I love you, vith all my heart und soul und being. I love you."
